I'm picking up my first Alfa on Friday - a beautiful black 159 2.4 JTDm Lusso Qtronic. I'm so excited!
We once had a 155 saloon on hire and my wife swears it was the best car she's ever driven. Circumstances being what they were, afterwards we could only afford to own a succession of Ford Escorts, and more recently VW Polo's, but the memory of the grippy ride, gorgeous road holding and lovely engine sound sort of stayed with us.
More recently, I've had a few larger cars on hire for work. I've driven Vauxhall Insignia's, assorted bmw 1, 3 series and one 5 series. I've even splashed out on a couple of Merc c classes for holiday hires. Most recently I had a Saab 9.3 tid, which performed very well on a snowy drive down to Sussex and back in January.
The time came to replace our most recent Polo (an 02 1.4 petrol, manual) and I thought we'd move up a size or two. Whilst researching all of the above, it suddenly occured to me that I could look at an alfa. It had never occured to me before that I could ever afford to own one.
But once I saw the front end of a 159 close up, I just knew that's what I wanted. The more I looked, and read, the more I wanted one, depsite all of the horror stories I've read here and the general British antipathy to Alfa's. And once I drove the 159, I knew it was love...and the Mrs approves too
Anyway, sorry for all this blurb - as you can tell I'm very excited now, and looking forward to learning more from you all, and sharing my experiences too. And maybe I'll wave and get a wave back one day ...
