Help with lighting/electrical

New to this branch of forum.
I have got a Alfa 156 2001. I have been having problems with driver's side rear light. The brake light works but not the light(even though it is the same light bulb). Originally the rear light was not working at all and I have changed the light bulb. Now it has a very dim glow to it and when I get out the car and lock it up there is still a very dim glow(slightly dimmer) to the rear light meaning there must still be power going to the light.
I have taken it to my nearest alfa garage and they have done a diagnostic check on it and told me that it is the lighting module which is inside the reve counter. This means I need to change the rev counter and I have been quoted 300 all in.
Has anyone got thoughts about whether this is actually the problem or got any suggestions about a cheaper way of solving this or can I source the rev counter somewhere cheaper and get it fitted at the garage?
