Re: Hello!!!

Hi Phil, Welcome to AO, all the help you need is here, except I dont know much about 147s, many others do though

Your best bet to get an honest opinion around your way may be to call the local gatwick alfa specialist, Rusper Alfa, very helpful people, and know what they are doing

Cheers

Hi Phil, welcome to AO. So you're looking for a 147... nice.
Is it a second hand? Petrol or JTD?

Re: Hello!!!

Yes, I have a 147 1.6TS.
Even if I'm not much into the dark side (diesel ) I must say that the JTD's are actually great engines. But if you don't have any problem with petrol costs...
So, the advise I can think about now is about the variator on the TS engines. If the 147 or 156 is recent (as I suppose they are) they probably wont have any problem with that. Just make sure it doesn't a daga daga sound like a diesel, for more then a couple of seconds when starting up. And make sure the oil level is fine. I bet you'll get a big smile on your face.

Re: Hello!!!

Are they very thirsty then?what is the variator?

I was looking at a 1.6 twin spark lusso here:http://pilot.alfa-approved-cars.co.u...DealerId=63204

Although the missus wants a 5 door! oh well!

Could you give me some idea on service costs please, like I said I have a a-class so servicing is expensive with them.

Thanks a lot for your help

Re: Hello!!!

It only depends on the way you press the throttle. They might be a little bit thirsty but that's the problem of driving hard.
I got better averages after the remap, but just to give you an idea, yesterday I got 5.8L after driving for 80kms, at an average speed of +-80kms/h, relaxing drive, I know . But usually I get 8.6 or 8.8 (65% motorway, 35%city). Of course that if I push it hard it goes uuupppp...
Maybe someone else can give you other numbers.

The phase variator is an electrohydraulic mechanism that changes the valve timing giving you more power and torque when you need it. If it has any problem, it just wont give you that power but at least it wont mess with anything else.

Sorry I can't give you service cost values as I'm not in UK.

Thumbs Up Re: Hello!!!

Hi Phil.

My wife used to have a 147 1.6 Lusso.

Most of her driving is around town and it averaged 28mpg.

Best i ever got was a 80mile round trip when i really drove like a big girl and managed 37mpg.

Worst i ever got got was rushing back to Staffordshire from Milton Keynes at 90-95mph and got 23mpg.

I deally you should see around the 30mpg mark.

I used to have a 156 2.0TS and that was more economical. Anyone else comment on this??

Service costs vary between 175 - 300 at a a main dealer. Expect to pay more though when you come around to getting the belts done.

All the best and good luck!!

Re: Hello!!!

Philly - I reckon the service costs will be about the same as on your Merc(?).

If I can give you one piece of advice it would be to buy a 156. Go for a 2.0 JTS Veloce. It's twice the car the 147 will ever be. IMHO.

Re: Hello!!!

Hi Philly and welcome to AO,
I might be daft, but what kind of Merc are youdriving now?
If it is what I think it is, i suggest you get your 4rse in a 147 pronto
you won't be dissapointed.. and inspite of what all these old school petrol heads tell you, the JTD is a beauty

oh, BTW, i'm a former A-class driver, by far the worst car I've ever driven.. and if it wasn't for the gorgeous girl attached to it, i would have bailed out without even thinking about it

Re: Hello!!!

Should be some good deals about on 147's at the moment, because the face lift is just over the Horizon.
Mind you if you can afford to buy new, it might be worth waiting for the facelifted 147's as the Handling is said to be greatly improved.

Let us know how you get on, IMO the 156 is the better of the two, the 147 needs the bigger wheels to look right, but it spoils the ride quality.

Re: Hello!!!

Not too sure about the 147, but I guess many of the usual checks apply to both cars.

As Spanky said, make sure that the cambelt has been changed at the correct interval (36k or 3yrs) - this is important. Make sure that the previous owner was vigilant about the oil levels, as the petrol engine can sometime drink a bit (look for receipts etc). Check the suspension for creaks and knocks, as these may need attention.

Most of all, though, enjoy the test drive, and revel in the lovely feel of the Alfa. You WILL be hooked

Servicing costs can be on the dearer side (compared to Ford etc), but if the car is out of warranty, you can save a fair chunk of money (and possibly get better service) by using an independant specialist. Depending on where you live, the guys round here can usually recommend a good garage.

Re: Hello!!!

I suppose it's a very low mileage Alfa? Here they put the service cars for sale with 1000kms to 10000kms. It's rare the one you get with more them 20000kms.

Re: Hello!!!

Hi I just bought an Alfa 156 1.6 veloce, and ive got to say its a fantastic car, very comfortable , great sounding engine, loads of gadgets that puts most German rivals to shame. The 1.6 pulls the car with very well , its not the fastest but it never feels underpowered. I have found the build quality excellent and everyone I speak to admires the way it looks.

Re: Hello!!!

That's what I've been saying (not out loud ) that the 1.6 isn't really that underpowered ....
