Hi I am Paul from Kent

I am driving a 2000 156 2.0 TS Selespeed which I upgraded from my 1995 146 Boxer 1.7 16v. I agree once you've had one you want more!
As my new model is more sophisticated and is due it's 48000 service I called my local dealer (Pipers in Maidstone) and was quoted £195-00 for this service. Is this reasonable or is it a standard service that my local mechanic could undertake?
Your views will be appreciated. What a great place I've found here!
Paul.(kopykat156).

Re: Hi I am Paul from Kent

Hi Paul,

Welcome to AO, have fun !

On the service point that's not a bad price for a 48K if I remember rightly however what I will mention that if the car didn't get the belt/tensioners replaced (not just inspected) at 36K I'd suggest biting the bullet and gettign them done now. This will increase the service cost by a good few hundred pounds - although there may be a specialist in your area that will do it cheaper.

I'd use either alfa specialist or AR dealer rather than a general garage especially with the selespeed as they have the experience with the cars foibles!

As you might read AR UK have put a belt inspection into the 36K service, but the only way to do this properly is to take it off at which point you might as well replace the belt!

Alfa UK have recently stopped compensating people as a matter of course for timing belt fails on 156's and there are many stories of them going before the 72K service. Whilst this position as far as trading standards go is not totally clear i.e. it's not been tested as far as I'm aware. It's probably cheaper to bite the bullet and get it done before you have problems.

This is not a unique problem to alfa ts engines, for example vauxhall have recently cut the belt change interval to 40K on a range of other engines.

Enjoy your car and enjoy AO....

Oh of course dont forget to post some pics!

The steering wheel is on the wrong side !!!!

Better have your local dealer look in to it !!!

Nice shots, Paul. Lovely 156 with a great set of wheels. And the black leather interior goes so well with the grey exterior...

Very, very nice!

Re: Hi I am Paul from Kent

Thanks for all your kind comments. . I think I am gonna enjoy it here.
I am planning a few small jobs on it already, such as some colour coded side skirts and maybe a small rear spoiler. I will also be changing the amber side repeaters....(a must I think).... Once done I will open a garage.
Where's the best place online to buy these mods?
Well thanks again,
kopykat156. Paul.

Re: Hi I am Paul from Kent

Hello Paul - Nice Motor n a top colour Get on to the clear repeaters asap! the AO shop does them for around £19, I also colour coded the wing mirrors, quite a simple DIY job, get the paint number from dealer and then pop to Halfords and get the spray paint, some primer and lacquer, rub the mirrors down, two or three coats of primer, then the paint and follow up with a couple of coats of lacquer.
