First time Alfa buyer seeks learning from Alfa Jedi Masters
I'm a 26 year old 'mature' 3rd year student of Philosophy and International Relations born and bred in the shire, in north-west England. My heart has always ruled my head so when I decided to start shopping for my first car I immediately searched Autotrader and Pistonheads for the gorgeous ***** 147. Unfortunately my initial planned budget was stretched to find a low mileage JTD. My Uncle has a mint Audi Quattro 10V just like the one Gene Hunt drives on the TV series Ashes to Ashes. Having always admired it I decided to chase down a 115PD B5 A4, (because I like questing for chicken teeth) but 10 years takes its toll on a car and having seen some rotters and some suspiciously low miles, high #owners examples for sale by mechanics (tut, tut), I decided to dodge that bullet.
The game changed when I was given a check for 1k from my parents. My approach changed; I stopped looking at anything that had been to Pluto and back and cast my eyes over newer A3s, A4s, Golfs, Boras: anything VAG turbo diesel essentially. One pub discussion with a mates dad about the pick up on his 159 and buying an ***** was back on the table. It turns out that a second series 156 is generally lower/similar insurance group to a comparable 147!! I was astonished by the number of high spec low milers for less than 5k. With zero no claims on my insurance and £300 between insuring a six year old 1.4 Fiesta and a 150bhp 156, I might as well buy something I can love and keep hold of for a few years rather than something I'll want to trade up from in 2 years time.
So now I plan to save to around 5k + 1k insurance + 1k maintenance buffer and do it right, since I don't really need the car immediately. Currently I'm considering a 156 1.9JTD 150 Veloce/Lusso so we'll see how well that works out I guess. If it does go wrong, it will almost certainly be my favourite mistake. I joined the forum to learn the good and bad about living with 147s and 156s, particularly the cost, buying advice, general questions etc.
