A Dream Realized
Hi Everyone: I'm Jon, 50, British and living in Tokyo. I just bought my first Alfa -- a 159 Sportwagon 3.2 JTS Q4 in Oltremare blue (I think), secondhand, 20,000 km on the clock. Some would call it a mid-life crisis but I prefer to think of it as the triumph of heart over head now that I am at a stage where I can afford that luxury. I've loved and dreamed of owning an Alfa for over 35 years, ever since I heard the engine note on two of my friends' Alfasuds when I was studying in Spain. Came close to buying a 145 once but a preoccupation with fuel consumption (misguided?) lured me away to a Japanese rival. In any event at the time I found the straight lines of the 145 less than attractive: maybe the car was just before its time, I am more sympathetic now, although for my money, the 159 is the most beautiful car of the modern era.
I'll be honest the 3.2 V6 wouldn't have been my first choice but the 1.75Tbi was never shipped to Japan, and with no more new cars, the choice was among the few secondhand ones coming on the market, but who's complaining?
I'm sure many here will think driving an automatic Alfa misses the point, but I should just point out that it is extremely rare to get a manual transmission car in Japan: most Japanese drivers never learn to drive them.
Cheers, Yoroshiku onegaishimasu
