166 in Alice Springs
Greetings to all Members,
I'm Bokway, new to this forum, and recently converted back to Alfa ownership (custodianship-really) after years of flirting with non-Italian mistresses.
I live in Alice Springs, the red centre of Central Australia, where all Alfas are pretty rare. Recently I got terribly excited about a red 166 that popped up on the web after spending a year in a garage. The car was 3000kms away in Sydney but looked smart, so the wife and I flew over, bought the car and then drove it home in four days, via Bathhurst, Orange, Broken Hill, Port Augusta in South Australia, then Coober Pedy, Marla, and finally Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. We did 3400kms, used 335 litres of 98 ron fuel and not a drop of oil or water!
Shortly after arriving home we discovered multiple ambiguities in the service record, and there being no dealers or Alfa specialists in this area, we were forced to drive down to Adelaide and back (3200kms) to get the car serviced, with new belts, water pump, filters, etc. Thankfully we found a fantastic workshop full of rare Alfa racing cars (ever seen a race-kitted Montreal?) and a very dedicated owner/manager who explained everything and kept all the replaced parts to show us.
So now we keep a gorgeous Rosso Red 166 V6 Sporto that causes dropped jaws and admiring looks every time we drive it. Sure my wallet is a lot lighter than it used to be and I suspect that my Wife will eventually tire of the unbridled enthusiasm, but to keep matters in check I pretended not to blanch when she bought herself a beautiful opal ring in Coober Pedy and a diamond engagement ring (six years after our wedding!) in Adelaide.
All considered, we covered 6400kms in eight days on the road, saw massive amounts of outback Australia, spent far more than we ever intended, and came home relieved and gratified that Alfa custodianship is still a terribly satisfying affair. The best part is that I get to keep a beautiful Italian mistress and my Wife is actually supportive of the whole business.
For those who may be interested I'll post some pictures and details on the 166 forum.
Cheers for now,
