2,5 v6 gear selector refit

Hi Guys

I hope someone can help ... please !!!

I bought a 2,5 v6 as a non-runner and re-build project. A plug had come out of the crankshaft, run a bearing and the previous owner continued to drive the poor car, with I presume huge knocking and eventually ruined the crank, shattered a piston and smashed a conrod. The engine and gearbox was removed and the engine has been totally redone.

Upon motor re-installation into the car with all the bits and pieces, the gearbox selector was refitted into its housing and the cables reattached. The gearbox now seems to be jammed and the selector wont come out. The clutch slave cylinder has been bled and seems to be fine. I dare not proceed with the rest of the bits and pieces unless I have to remove things again.

How can this be rectified and what could have gone wrong?

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
