BMW 735i

Hello, and am I mental?

Hi Everyone,

I must confess that I've joined this community as I'm looking to buy my first ever Alfa and could do with some pointers. Hopefully one day I'll be able to seed a little knowledge back in return . I'll spend some time trawling through the posts, of course, but if anyone could either PM me or post anything here in reply that would get me started I'd really appreciate it.

I'll just give you a quick outline of where I'm up to etc. Lived in London for 9 years up to a year ago - didn't need a car. Moved back up North and borrowed a '98 BMW 735i off my uncle. It's horrible and costs a tenner every time I pull out onto a roundabout quickly. I need a very reliable (!) little diesel. My first choice would have been an Audi A3 but you're looking at 9k on the road for something in good nick with lowish miles. I love the Alfa 147 for lots of reasons but never owned an Alfa and don't know anyone who has. The consumer sites and forums all say the same thing - "Great car but in the garage every ten minutes" which is precisely what I don't need. I have a budget of 6k maximum on the road and simply can't afford to have anything unreliable. I understand that the Lusso is the one to get but other than that I'm a bit in the dark. I spoke to the local dealership yesterday and they're getting a 55 plate in for me to look at with 50k on the clock. They want 6 thousand pounds for it including 12 months warranty. Sounds a lot given that I can buy one a year newer with only 31,000 on the clock for 500 less privately, but I think the warranty is important for me.

So, that's about it. As I say, if anyone could spend a few minutes jotting down any thoughts it would help me a lot.

Thanks a lot guys,

Hi and Welcome to AO, have a look in the model specific lounge(s) for more info.

I have to say you do seem rather hung up on the reliability issue, if all the forums etc are telling not to get one, then don't. Have you driven one yet?

Get one from a main dealer with a 12 month warranty for peace of mind. I've had mine for six months or so and it's certainly had problems. The dealer has been pretty good and half the car is now brand new so I'm fairly confident that I've had a goody. If it didn't have the main dealer warranty then the car would have been long gone by now, so I'd agree with you on the warranty point. It's worth the extra.

There's no doubt that there's something special about Alfa's mind. Mine has spent most of my time with it ruining my life but I still love it, and as I said, I now think that its in pretty good nick and I've still got a lot of warranty left so I'm not too worried.
