Thanks for the welcomes.
The problem with the car was self inflicted I think. My daughter had a flat battery so I decided to try some jump leads to gt her going. This wasn't working as I think they are faulty (in the bin now). I was going home to fetch another set I have, but decided to call into the local shop for a few supplies. When I got back to the car it wouldn't start. It was showing ASR failure and Immobiliser failure, and showing a key icon and asking for a code. I checked out a couple of posts telling me to remove the battery for an hour, short the battrey leads (not connected to the battery) and reconnect. Tried this, but no joy. Took the battery off and put on charge overnight. Went back to the car and tried again. Still same probem. Towed it home and got my partner to try turning it over while I looked into the engine compartment. I saw some sparking under the battery area. It turned out to be the main earth from the battery. It was shorting where in was connected to the engine frame/body. After loosening the nut, cleaning and retightening.....hey presto it started first turn of the key. HAPPY DAYS. Thought I was facing a £300+ bill, but ended up costing nothing.
