What started your passion for Alfa Romeo?
Back In June 2001 My father had to visit the PLMA fair in Amsterdam for business and upon his return he brought back some Car magazines, little did I know my future passion was right on the front page!, there was a review on a 147 but it was all in Italian I could not understand it, but the pictures looked awesome!.
In early September 2001 by some strange co incidence I was driving past Ateco Australia and as I stoped out came a Brand New Shining Alfa Romeo 147 in Red, I remembered the pictures that I saw in the magazine but it was nowhere as near as nice as the real thing.
I took one glimpse & an emotion inside me was stirred it was something indescribable; as long as I live I will never forget what I felt.
I never use to be into cars, don’t get me wrong I liked cars but not to the degree of now.
Owning an Alfa Romeo 147 has changed everything.
What car(s) do you drive and why?
In October 2001 my 1995 Saab 9000CD was starting to play games with me It did 110,000Km on the clock, The problems began with major Oil leaks from both engine & transmission. Then came the electric problems , windscreen wipers came on by themselves & high beams as well. The problems just became too much for me, everyday something went wrong with the car from suspension to needing a new ignition. I started to see my money go to waste, I paid hundreds of dollars but problems kept coming it was no use so ……
I totally stop using the Saab & reverted to a company car, A good rear wheel drive Holden Commodore Ute V8. (Ahh I must admit my dark side here doing handbrake 360 turns in a V8 Ute was fun but dangerous until you get caught one weekend by your own father!!!)
My punishment which I totally deserved was no car!!!. Prior to all this from the age of fourteen I worked everyday at a Tennis centre after school, then latter applied for a job at head office of a major supermarket here in OZ called Franklins which I worked part time & also worked for a computer company building PC’s. I kept working & working saving & saving & saving I saw my money grow!!! Decided to place it with some shares in a company that was just about to be listed on the ASX (Australian Stock Exchange) called Melbourne IT the day after it was listed my share portfolio tripled which I was very fortunate. I took my money & placed back into my account.
Coming now back to October 2001 I read in a Local Newspaper that the Alfa Romeo 147 was about to be launched, I went to the local dealer took a test drive and loved every single moment! The only problem was the $$$$ I had enough of my own savings but thought It would be too much to blow on a car . I took many other cars for a test drives From a Ford XR6 to a Audi A3, nothing compared to my dream it was my dream all along since day one as I saw it come out of the driveway of Ateco! So rang up the dealer placed an order, traded in my Crappie Saab & On the 30th Of November 2001 I was a proud owner of a 147 Selespeed.
90% of my savings went to the car but never looked back it was well worth it!
What was your first Alfa?
147 Selespeed the first of many Alfas to come that I will own! (But will need to earn $$$$$$ to own them)
Have you made any modifications to your car? If so what & why?
One day was just playing around on the web searching for Alfa Romeo 147 the two most interesting URL’s that came up were the following: www.147dude.com
after reading Ulf’s (AKA 147dude) on moding his bella it started to inspire me & after reviewing the “Your 147 Section” on Hans web site that really confirmed it for me.
So when it comes to Moding my Bella I pay great tribute to Hans & Ulf! Thanks Guys!.
My Mods began with a Sebring Exhaust, Ventilated Cross Drilled Front Brembo Disc’s, Then over time added K&N Air filter System, Smoked Side Indictors which 147dude kindly sent to me!, Alfa Linea Front Strut Bar, MOMO Handbrake, Silver Gate shifter,156 Radio Antenna & last but no least my newest mod coloured my front callipers red!.
Moding my car is fast becoming a sickness of some sort, as soon as I see something on the web that looks good I order it. I have to get something for my Bella at least once a month.
What do you like most about Alfas?
Every time I switch the ignition of my car I have a big grin on my face the sound is so sweet some people say my passion for my 147 is crazy but no matter how many things go wrong with it I still love it. Since I added my K&N Air Filter & the Sebring exhaust the sound is to die for! When I travel I hardly listen to the radio or play a CD I just listen to the Revs of the car.
What do you like least about Alfas?
a. When My Bella starts to play cat & mouse with me (I.e. Selespeed Problems & other Electrical, software problems )
b. I was one of the very first people in Sydney to Own a 147 now every second hatchback that zooms past it a 147! (It’s become to common!! I don’t like that)
c. I some times regret that I got 17’ supersport alloys have only done 27,500Km & already gone through five tires all fell victims to potholes!
What would be your dream cars?
Alfa Romeo 147 GTA AWD V8 Twin Turbo would be nice. Otherwise my real dream car has not been created yet.
What will be your next car?
What do you think ? What car would you least like to have?
Call me weird & crazy I know but never been to keen with Merc or BMW. In the German Sector always preferred Audi. Ahh Yes I will also never ever buy a Saab Again.
What would be your ideal drive in an Alfa,
This is a really hard question to answer as there are so may ideal drives I would love to do but , Ever since I had my driving licence I love to drive for me it’s a form of relaxation except when its peak hour! Some weekend’s I just hop into my Bella and drive & drive away.
My all time ideal drive would be to travel across all of Europe in my 147 stopping along and taking my time seeing all the sites, making new friends.
Any humorous Alfa or car related stories you wish to share with us?
A funny story that comes to mind was last Xmas I was stopped 5 times in one night by police they pulled me over to the side each time for a breathalyser test ,when the Police officer asked me If I had anything to drink I said yes “ A Glass Of Water”.
What interests do you have outside of Alfas?
Some days there are none its Just Alfa This & Alfa That!!!
Otherwise I Swim, Mountain Bike Ride, Do Yoga twice a week, like building computer systems, Listening to music (Dj’s Like Paul Van Dyk, Ministry Of Sound, Gatecrasher, Club, Dance, Trance Music but mainly chilli out stuff!), Travel & different cultures interest me a great deal as well.
My Outlook on Life
Today we live in a world full of uncertainty, we don’t know whats going to be next, I am a firm believer you should never put anything off as tomorrow may not be there. My main wish is that I am healthy, without your health you can’t enjoy life.
In life I find to achieve a goal any goal the key is determination & being persistent. If you fail try again never give up! Follow your dream. It can be hard at times but hang in there.
I am going to speak from the heart here, At the moment I’m at a stage of my life where I do not know which direction to take. I left school in December 1998 since then have not studied and Just been working. I need to study but do not know what to do. I’m not the academic type either.
Eventually I would like to maybe open a business of some sort. In the mean time Study is my target but other parts of me is saying to Travel the world.
I can’t leave the study option out. as the longer I leave it the worse it will be for me to get back into it.
