I currently own a VW Passat 2.0 Petrol but am looking to change. I do like Italian cars very much and have always fancied an Alfa 156 or 147.
I have to sell the Passat first which should be happening shortly. It is worth circa £2.2k and will be spending the same amount on its replacement mainly down to my soon to be ex wanting her half
So TBH I have considered Mondeo, Focus, Fiesta
, Puma, Cougar, Vectra, Saab (still a maybe) and of course the two mentioned Alfa's. I registered on a Puma site as I was quite keen at one point but have since gone off the idea.
The Saab is still a possibility too. Now I said economy didn't I? With exception of the Mondeo, Focus, Saab and 156 the rest were not diesel. I am listening to my head and heart now and there is just something about Alfa Romeos that as Clarkson and co say "You are not a petrolhead until you have owned an Alfa"
My favourite is a 156 2.4JTD. The few on Autotrader I have seen range from £1.5k-£2k and mileage from 103k to 140k and couple red
. So what sort of problems with these cars should I expect? I read on here I think about water pump failure. I suspect they should of had at least one belt change with that mileage, maybe two. Another weakness these days with diesel is the turbo. Certainly on VW's they have problems with bearings etc and I guess these are no exception? Is the diesel engine pure Alfa or is it from another manufacture? I suspect the latter.
Then there is a 147 1.6 TS Lusso too. I prefer the idea of the 156 because it is diesel and my head suggests this for the economy and it is pretty quick too. The 1.6 in the 147 is the same tax band as the Passat whereas the JTD is a little lower, and I just love the look of 156's.
So any help much appreciated and I hope to making contributions to the site soon
Now the most important question. Can I be a true petrolhead with a diesel? Diesels are just bloomin tractors but does that extra cylinder on the JTD 2.4 make any difference?
