Alfa 156 steering rack problem?
Hi All, we have a 156 in our family which has developed a knocking sound from the front end which is getting worse. I must confess that I have very limited knowledge of the mysteries of things mechanical, I can offer you assistance with regard the digital switchover but as far as cars go, I am a practising blithering idiot, whilst my bro-in-law, who owns the 156, is in fact, a fully qualified blithering idiot. He took it to our local village garage, who pronounced that the steering rack is completely shot and subsequently demanded £600 plus vat to repair. However, I have a brother who works in the motor trade and he says he suspects the "anti roll bar drop links" to be the suspect, and says it should cost a lot less than that to repair. I, and my blithering idiot of a brother in law, would be extremely grateful for any advice from anybody with experience of this symptom. The car concerned is a 2002 model and there is no evidence of any steering shake or vibration through the actual steering wheel. It is purely a clunking sound from somewhere near the front. The car has done just under 70,000 miles. Thanks for taking your time to read this.
