It's me... I am apparently insane.. you decide
Hi all.. On Friday I bought a 1997 Spider 2.0 16vTS .. in silver.. looks smashing, comfy as you like.. engine doesn't work..
it came with another engine so that's good (I think) but the other engine is currently sat in the boot of my landrover...
The story so far is that the chap who sold it to me bought it 6 months ago as a non runner.. he was told that it had a seized starter motor..
He had a look at it and tried to turn the engine over by hand but says he felt it clashing (pistons to valves type clashing) so had a look at the timing belt which looks OK.. he assumed it had jumped a tooth and went in search of a new engine which he bought off ebay but never heard running.. he then put the whole lot in his shed and got too busy to do any more..
It's now on my drive and I am gonna have a go.. I will start posting in the right places once I get started but in the meantime here's the plan:
put the engine that's already in it back together, check the timing, charge the battery and try to start the engine.. see what happens
assuming the engine wont start or run, check the starter motor.. you never know the first guy might have been right...
assuming that isn't the problem, pull the head off and see what I can work out.. if it looks like only the head has suffered then swap the head off the other engine and go from there, if the pistons or bores look to have taken any sort of a hit then replace the whole engine and gearbox with the other on and then strip and rebuild the old engine
MOT, Tax, off I go......
I aim to have it up and running by June at the latest so I can enjoy it in the summer....
anyway, all my mates reckon I'm insane.. hopefully you lot will understand and weigh in with lots of top tips and advice as I go along..
