Knocking from front of 156
If you hear a knocking from the front suspension of your 156, before you start changing assorted expensive parts by dint of educated guesswork, jack the front of the car up and try rocking the front wheels left and right. One wheel at a time, hold the tyre and move the wheel left and right. If you feel play, turn the steering wheel so the rack is fully extended towards you. Remove the clip on the end of the track rod gaiter and slide the gaiter back, exposing the ball-joint on the end of the rack. Chances are, if you move the wheel again, you will see play in this ball-joint. Alfa's only remedy for this is that you have a new rack fitted, which is a £500 job if you get it done on the cheap. I recommend that you try the specialist dismantlers, some of whom keep the good bits of broken racks for this very reason. This worked for me.
