Marital Status

which cars do you drive and why?

Volvo S40 because itís my wifeís and she chose it.

Alfa 156 because I didnít want something like everyone else has.

Are you a real passionate for Alfa Romeo?

Probably not. Iíve loved all cars ever since I can remember but never really gave Alfas much thought. I think I probably felt they were out of reach.

I regard the 60s GTV as just about the prettiest car ever though and always had a thing for the 164.

What or how started your passion for Alfa Romeo andÖ
Ö.do you think itís fundamental to own one to have the passion?

Hard to say really. I decided to buy myself a decent car (decent in my terms means more than £1500) and discovered that an Alfa 156 was actually cheaper than Mondeos and Vectras of the same age. It was somehow more appealing that a Bee-Emm and Mercs leave me cold. The only other serious contenders were a Volvo T5 and a Saab 9-3 turbo. My wifeís preference was the Alfa so thatís what I bought.

Is it essential to own one? People who I know who have no interest in cars at all seem quite taken with it so it definitely stirs up something in people.

Would you ever consider joining an Alfa Club or are you already a member of one?

The only OC I ever joined was the Capri Ownersí club and it was rubbish, frankly. Strange men with mullets wearing track suits and white socks. Paul Calf rides again, and meets up at a pub in Stockport to talk about prog rock, ĹĒ spanners and why people from other clubs look down on them at car shows.

What do you like most about Alfas?

In mine itís either the blue leather seats or the little lighty-up Alfa badge on the rev counter.

What do you like least about Alfas?

Nothing really apart from the back seats in a GTV being too small.

I used to have a Mini so everything is reliable compared to that.

What would be your dream cars?

MK1 Escort RS2000.
1967 Corvette.
90s Jag XJR
Maserati Quattroporte
Fiat Multipla

What car would you least like to drive?

Citreon Xsara Picasso

For you, whatís the most popular thread on AO?

The one with the most pictures of scantily clad women. If someone can post a link Iíd be very grateful.

What would be your ideal drive in an Alfa (destination, passenger, driving music, etc)?

Anywhere really. Passenger would be my daughter as sheís the only one who shares the passion for cars. Music, Bon Jovi, Foo Fighters or Johnny Cash would do the trick.

Any humorous Alfa or car-related stories you wish to share with us?

Occasionally my work requires me to travel in hire cars. On one occasion Avis brought my car, parked it on next doorís drive and pushed the keys through their letterbox long after theyíd gone to work. They brought another (MKVI Escort)and I went my trip. I returned and parked it across the road from my house. The following morning I got up and decided to set off to work to discover some thieving scrote had nicked the wheels off it. I went to work and arranged to have it collected. When I arrived home the tosspot who lived across from me came out to complain because theyíd propped it up on bricks from his rockery. He then ignored me for the next 12 months, to the extent that if I was working on my car he would come and stand at the end of his garden ignoring me.

Or there was the time I broke down in my Capri. As I fettled it. Two young lads stopped and offered to help in American accents (which is unusual in Salford. I was managing OK so they just stayed and chatted whilst I spannered then said ďhave you ever met any mormons before?Ē As it happened I had, outside Kentucky Fried Chicken in Rochdale in 1990 but I didnít want to **** on their parade. They went on their way having given me a pamphlet about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints but were two very nice lads.

Or the time when the wiper motor on my Lada burned out because a bottle of tipp-ex got wedged in the linkage.

Or the time when we changed the oil on my mateís Metro but forgot to put the sump plug in.

What interests do you have outside of Alfas?

Football (Manchester City, Ringley Park Rangers (my sonís team)
Cars in general
Donner kebabs

Tell us something nobody knows about you. (E.g. special skill, ever been on TV, etc)

I have a spectacular memory for faces. If I see someone on telly I can usually recall what Iíve seen them in before, no matter how obscure or how long ago.

Do you have a party trick? If so what is it?

I take my shirt off and dance like a fool when I drink tequila.

What do you like most about the Alfaowner forum? Any favourite threads, episodes or people?

Thriving North West Section.

Cool Wall

No people yet as I havenít been around long.

If you had £50,000 you had to spend in 72 hours, how would you choose to spend it?

Can I buy a Corvette and an Escort?

If no cars are allowed, Iíd take my wife and kids away for the weekend and eat really expensively.
