My speedometer stopped working, I purchased a new cable but when I began to replace it, I found out that it was OK. I think that the pulse generator is bad. I removed it and it has the following numbers on it:
60554 800 (note the 8 could be a 0)
How would I go about trouble shooting it? The connector has three (3) pins and when I turn on the ignition I have power across two of the pins.
Any help would be appreciated.
Since I have the pulse generator out of the car, my thought it to hookup a 12v source to the two pins with the same polarity as when it was in the car and connect a voltmeter from the other pin to ground, then spin the input shaft with an electric drill to see if any voltage is generated. If I get voltage relative to the speed of the drill, I can assume that the pulse generator is OK and my problem is in the actual speedometer, which would suck because I would have to take the dash apart.
I assumed that the speedometer cable was OK because I could not turn the cable by hand after I disconnected it from the pulse generator. After sleeping on the problem, I decided to jack a rear wheel off the ground, start the engine, and put it in gear. With the wheel spinning the exposed section of the speedometer cable should be turning also, but thank God it wasn't. So I replaced the speedometer cable with a new one and put everything back together and now my speedometer works.
