AR 156 2.0TS

I have always wanted one, but resisted until now. Today I caught a train to Essex from Bath and bought a red 156 2.0TS with Veloce alloys. The car has a couple of issues but it was too nice and too cheap to turn down, I am a mean haggler. The issues it has the brakes feel non existent and the temp gauge rises and falls, rises particularly on prolonged high speed (well the motorway speed limit of course!) I checked the oil filler cap and there was the dreaded mayonnaise, but after a call to my mechanic friend he send it could just be condensation, after the drive home I suspect the head gasket is on the way out, does anyone agree or able to offer an alternative explanation?

Also there is no record of a cam belt change in the last 36k so I need this done, do you need the variator and water pump changed as a matter of course or is this just 'belt and braces' and can anyone tell me the cheapest place and expected price? and finally the key works but is missing it's rubber cover, can this be replaced or do you need a new key and if so how much are they? (including programming if needed)

Aside this she is stunning in red with the subtle spoiler and big Veloce wheels and great to drive I am very impressed. I had held off and bought a Rover 75 Viking V6 sport (it was experimental car just before MGR went bust and the only one in the world to my knowledge) great car but was offered twice what I paid for it so off it went, then I owned a 3.0 X type sport, fab until 'written off' not my fault, then an A4 2.8 avant, not great but went like a missile and finally to my embarrassment a 2.5 V6 Omega Auto ! I had owned many cars prior to these, but it was these 4 cars chosen for power, equipment, individuality* and heritage*, *aside the Omega of course lol (yes all Alfa qualities) I decided you need to own one before you can judge it and apparently your not a 'petrol head' until you have so there it is in not so much of a nutshell.

Any help appreciated and kind regards
