Hello (and help!)

Hi, just though I'd introduce myself here as a (hopefully) soon-to-be owner.
We've just had out first baby and as a result decided to get a bigger, more practical car. (at the moment I drive a Scimitar and my wife has a Micra) We're on a budget of 5k and our new car has to be "Not too old, practical, cheap to run, insure and tax and have a good ncap rating."

Across the road from us is a used car garage and they have a new shape 156 Sportwagon 2.0JTD in metallic blue which has seriously caught my eye!
I've read up on them and understand that there's less space in the boot than the saloon, and that they are not ncap rated at all, but I WANT IT! has anyone got any good tips that I can use as leverage?
Also, any things in particular to look out for if I get a test drive, and what points could I use to negotiate the price down? (See, I've mentally got that far already!)
I desperately don't want to end up with a Focus or Astra, as has been suggested!!!
