Frustrated Hello!!

Hi all,

Am i glad to have found this site!!!

I have just had a major catatrosphe in my new(ish) 156.

Two weeks after purchasing this fine motor and 1000 miles past 60K the cam belt broke (i'll never let the wife drive again!!).

Got it towed to the garage and was told the valves were bent and crushed and the head had to be be machine and was quoted 1100 for the work.
At first i thought WTF (i am only an amatuer when it comes to engines) then after reading through many posts on this site i realized that i have gotten off light ! ! !

Was relieved to get it back the other day. However now when i drive it is very sluggish at low revs and seems to lose power at 5k revs.

Again this forum has provided me with potential solutions so hopefully i can have my fun car back in full working order and hopefully after i will only use this forum to say hi.

Thanks to all the peeps that have contributed so far.

Re: Frustrated Hello!!

Was it a local garage or an Alfa specialist?

Re: Frustrated Hello!!

It was a local garage (well i say local!) it miles from home and the RAC would only tow it to the nearest garage. The RAC guy contacted ahead to see if they could look at the problem and they agreed.

They have repaired the engine but i am now doubious whether they have done a thorough job after reading many many posts and other sites but still confused

Re: Frustrated Hello!!

Hello and welcome. Same thing happened to me a couple of years back - total bill was 1600 for a complete top end rebuild. Now I do this stuff myself and I'm guessing your garage was not Alfa trained because you have to use the correct tools - it is almost impossible to set the cam timing correctly without and I'd suggest that is why the car has little power. Even if they claim to 'mark' the belt and pulleys as soon as you dismantle the top end there are many variables to control toget the correct timing again.

Ask them if they had the correct camshaft locking tools as a starter.....and if they say yes ask them to show you that they match your engine size....... If they can't then its a bodge I'm afraid and its their call to sort it. if you're anywhere near Tewkesbury I might be able to help but otherwise good luck.
