I can vouch that Johnny at independent Alfa Specialists JJB Motors in York does an excellent job.
His workshop is always clean and tidy and must have even more equipment - including the AR Examiner - than a lot of the official dealers I've seen. Johnny himself is a factory trained technician with more than 12 years experience behind him and is very honest and knowledgable with it too.
He's not been going all that long - since February I believe - but has already built up an outstanding reputation around the York and Yorkshire area despite being burgled recently. He does a lot of repeat business and is steadily building up JJB Motors due to word of mouth recommendation. In my experience, he'll help anybody out but don't ask him to 'bodge' jobs or use spurious parts because he doesn't do it. The guy's obviously proud of what he does and won't compromise on quality, using only AR or OEM parts.
I have no connection whatsoever with his business other than being a very satisfied customer of his and it seems I'm not the only one. Business has been so good that Johnny's just taken on an apprentice and is shortly to move to bigger premises so that he can take on even more Alfa Romeo work whilst keeping his hourly rate at a reasonable level.
With a distinct lack of official Alfa Romeo dealers in the area (apart from the excellent Dews of Brighouse) and a couple of good independents closing down, such as BMC, or about to (like C.W. Lear in Keighley who'll be emigrating to NZ shortly), the 12-13 hours a day six days a week that Johnny's putting into his business at the moment must surely be to the advantage of all we northern based Alfisti. I think that he deserves to do well.
