Just bought a W reg 156, 2.5. Talk about trial by fire. Here's what happened: Bought from a local garage, told them needed something reliable as need to travel from London to Cornwall at least once a month to see my daughter. They said "no worries the car is sound". "Cool" I thought. So I paid my money and off I went.
22 hours later and 70 miles down the road, I'm sitting on the hard shoulder with boiling water spraying everywhere. I was sitting on the grass close to tears. Needless to say I had the car towed back to where I bought it by the AA - they said that the Head Biscuit, or whatever it's called, had gone. Where it had gone I have no idea. The owner of the garage said that he would fix the car even if it meant putting another engine in. 3 weeks later the car is fixed and have been "running it it" and keeping it under 2500 RPM as intructed by the mechanic. Tomorrow is D-Day, the car is back in and after a quick check of the thingy me bob and a tweak of the widget - sorry not very good with cars - I can drive it like it's meant to be driven, with gusto and purpose...hurrah!
No doubt some of you will say that the car is mashed and to give it up. All I can say is that the Head Biscuit was changed / repaired and they has put in a new timing belt - by the way is the the same as a cam belt? This was all at the showrooms expense.
Any words of wisdom???
