1.6 147 TS Lusso: terrible torque, gear stick play, smelly air con, ...but beautiful!
hello guys. brilliant forum - loads of useful information.
i've just purchased a silver 3 door 1.6L 147 TS Lusso which i'm struggling to walk past without stopping to admire. however unfortunately it is displaying many of the common characteristics of the 147 "personality" that seem to crop up again and again on this site.
the car is a late 2002 model, carrying about 66200 miles with 2 previous owners and full service history. Overall it is (aesthetically at least) in excellent condition. It had the cambelt changed @ 52k miles, after it broke on the previous owner bending 2 rods which according to the receipt enclosed in the service history was not a cheap fix. however it was fully repaired and the cambelt replaced.
i have noticed however that the car is low on torque below 2500 revs - to the extent that the car judders as if it is considering stalling. it is not as bad as some of the cases i have read about on this forum, but still enough to strike fear in my heart as i have recently taken on a mortgage and cannot afford to be shelling out a heap of money to put it right.
Also, there is an alarming amount of play (about an inch either side) in the gearstick even when it it is engaged in gear, and the stick does not self centre when in neutral. This does not appear to affect the box, and it slips into each gear perfectly easily and is not stiff at all. however it is quite disarming and can make gear selection slightly more challenging...!
finally the airconditioning has a distinct odour when switched on which i can only assume is intentional as it is not unpleasant. however when the climate control is switched to just fan, the odour changes and is not pleasant at all. any ideas people?
I appreciate that there are various threads addressing at least the first two of these issues. however as yet i have not come accross a sure fire fix! surely with these problems occuring so frequently someone must have found the solution?!?!
car is going into alfa lusso on saturday for a 'health check', but any suggestions to set my mind at rest in the interim would be greatly appreciated.
