147 Selespeed Grinding Noise

I hope someone can help me

I am a newb, but considering i have owned my 147 for 3 years i must be one of the lucky ones who has not had to post earlier!!

My alfa is a 147 selespeed 2002 51 plate, done 80,000 miles - lucky me!

It is currently parked up on my drive as its decided to start playing up.

Basically, when i start the car it revs fine and smooth in neutral. THen when i go to select first gear it displays 1 on the panel and then from under the bonnet there is this horrific grinding/crunching noise and then goes back into first gear.

I can occasionally get it into first by revving hard in neutral and then get it into first, so it only really has problems at low revs. When i come to a stop it feels as if it is going to stall and then at the last minute changes down a gear.

A mate of mine who used to be a mechanic said it sounds like the gears are slipping and not engaging properly.

Who knows if he's right, but was hoping someone had experience of this and could possible give any idea of what this might be.

Thanks hopefully
