1979 2Lt GTV

good days, bad days

I am a recent owner of a 1979 2 Lt GTV. Some poor sod got it off some kid who stripped it down, did a dodgy paint job then tried putting it back together. I'm not sure if i'm any more sensible either. But, as soon as I drove it it infected me. Even though it had a fire through the engine bay, ran like a dog, was missing stncro in 1st & 2nd, handbrake didn't work etc, etc - buy crieky it's fun to drive!

After finally breaking the clutch thruster (after double clutching too much) I decided it was time to renew the syncros, rear brake calipers and clutch. I removed the transmission and took it to a driveline specialist who has replaced syncro etc. Now, after replacing the transmission to it's rightful position, doing everything by the book... I can only get 5th and reverse! As the Zen and the art implies... when you reach for the hammer instead of the spanner, it's time for a cupp o tea.

So, before I go back to the driveline place and plead insanity I'm hitting the forums and this seems to be the best one. I'm hoping someone can suggest what might be the problem or at least things to check.
Regards, andrew.
