New guy - Help please!

Hi there!

Currently I drive a Subaru Impreza and, sadly, I think it's going to have to go as it's just destroying my wallet.

I've been looking for something with a bit of character and class, rather than just going for the usual mundane hatchback. So, I've stumbled across the world of Alfa Remeo!

I had a drive of a 1.6 147 Spark yesterday and quite enjoyed it (although the car itself was no good, lots of dents and a tow bar!).

What are 147s like with regards to running costs? I'm considering going for a 2L, although I'm not sure how thirsty they are (Parkers price guide says 31MPG - Seems fairly low, but nowhere near as bad as the Scoob). Also, what about servicing? And are parts expensive? Is it necessary to have Alfas serviced at main dealers or specialists, or are you alright taking them anywhere?

How about reliability? I know Alfas in general aren't known for being the most reliable of cars, but what are newer ones like?

Lastly, what should I be looking out for when I'm looking at them? Any common faults etc?

Thanks in advance and sorry for all the questions.

Re: New guy - Help please!

common faults! hmm where do i start ive owned 2 156's now and similar probbs on both, bonnet safety catch is the major one, allways check it and lubricate it often and when u open the bonnet make sure it's flipped back to close position, then theres the damn airbag light coming on!! this is the most annoying thing LOL erm... oh yeah the cover thing on the fuses bits under the steering wheel keeps falling off chucked em out on both my cars, wishbone thingy goes so remember to check that, and make sure you get 2 keyfobs if you only get one ill keep a eye out for your post about this think most alfies feel like chucking it on the floor and stamping on them
