Mercedes Owner

Hi,
I'm a newbie here but am well known in the Mercedes forums. I currently drive my third consecutive C Class. Between the three cars I have amassed 180,000 miles with zero breakdowns, few problems and no rattles BUT

Twice in the past I have owned Alfa Romeos. Twice I have loved them for having a heart and being fun to drive- but twice I have sold them because of huge bills and problems and dreadful build quality.

I love the look of the new 159 and might even consider selling the Merc to buy one IF the new Alfa didn't rattle, was reliable and well built.

You guys obviously know first hand about current Alfas- Would selling a lovely but tame Merc for an Alfa 159 be madness or can I now get passion and reliability in an Alfa??

Cheers in advance- all comments welcome.

PS. Both my Alfas were Suds which I loved driving but desolved while I turned my back

This is my current Mercedes

Nice looking Merc. The model year 2008 cars are supposed to be even better for build quality. Best take one out for a test drive.

Re: Mercedes Owner

Welcome R2D2, I do quite like the 159 and with my girlfriend being pregnant think it might have to be taken into consideration as the GT is hardly the best car for a baby seat. Oh well she has her Corsa. LOL!

Welcome anyway and hope you do make the right decision and buy another Alfa.

Re: Mercedes Owner

Welcome to the site!
I've been running around in my 156 for over 70.000 miles since new and not a rattle, not a niggle. And that's from before the quality improvements introduced for the 159/brera etc range.

Take one for a spin and make up your mind.

Re: Mercedes Owner

i have owned 155's,145's,156's and i can testify that the build quality in the brera is far superior to all these..they have all been fun to drive though!!!!..reliability never been an issue with any of my alfa's-did over 80000 miles in the 155 without missing a beat..go to your showroom and take one out and i am sure you will feel the difference in quality..you will want it!!!

Re: Mercedes Owner

Gorgeous Mercedes.

The 159 is supposedly quite reliable now, the GT has a few issues though as I've read.

Re: Mercedes Owner

Welcome to AO. It is a concern, I'd admit but quality has improved since the days of the Sud - fun as they were.

You've done well with your Merc's albeit only with an everage of 60k per car so it's not been a test of individual longevity. Check the 156 at Mango's High miles (Very RELIABLE those Alfa 156s!!!)

In all honesty, I seem to see a lot of relatively new Merc's broken down over the last year or more so maybe their standards are falling. I don't see so many Alfas broken down, but then again, they are quite a lot rarer than Merc and BMW fleet cars.

Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Under the hood, you and me are the same (Lightning McQueen)

It is a little tuning box that fits between the fly by wire throttle and the ECU and make the car feel a lot more responsive. Its a nice bit of kit.

Re: The how much for my car? I have no idea. i usually part ex.

I've just read this. This is the sort of thing that scares me about Alfa's. Fun, Passion but.............

Re: Mercedes Owner

I have continued to read various threads and posts on here and am getting a little alarmed at the number of suspension/gearbox problem especially with Selespeed. I guess every car forum will contain that manufacturers tales of woe but I am not getting a strong sense of Alfas are sorted yet. I hope to get a test drive next week.

Re: Mercedes Owner

The thing is, you get 2 types of selespeed gearbox: One that works how it should. And one that never works properly and gives nothing but problems. I'd say that you are right, there are an alarming number of issues even still with the Sele's from what I can tell.

You are much better off with the 6 speed manual, it's the best 'box Alfa have made in my opinion.

Re: Mercedes Owner

Yep ignore the Selespeed and get a manual box.

I have had a 147, a 156 and a 159 and the 159 is well screwed together and the materials are of a high standard. test drive one and you won't be disappointed.

Try it in the Ti spec and you'll be close to all you want on a car.

Best of luck

Re: Mercedes Owner

Hi R2D2,
I'm in a position where I know where you're coming from about pro's and con's of Merc and Alfa ownership.

We have a 98 145 Cloverleaf and a 91 Merc 300D. The Alfa is one of the best feeling cars to drive since my old Mk1 Astra GTE. Whenever it's parked up amongst all the Saxos/Novas/Corsas at Tesco etc, you feel a bit sorry for the owners because they drive bland,soul-less hatches. It makes you feel superior to other small hatches and looks great without adding 150kg of plastic and fibreglass. On the flip side, the 145 has cost us for a new engine (about £1200 including clutch, variator, belts discs and pads)and needs constant monitioring of fluids, wear etc.
An analogy-
You have a girlfriend. She treats you like dirt, belittles you in front of friends and family, won't cook, clean or help round the house, goes out and comes back late often has a smell of 'bloke' about her, never turns up when expected, your family/friends don't like her very much, she drinks too much, is loud and offensive in public, spends all her(and your) cash on expensive clothes and shoes, won't have sex unless it's when SHE wants and when she does, it's explosive, sweaty and adventurous.
You can't explain why, but for all these faults, you still love her.....a bit like our time with the 145!!

The Merc has been the epitomy of German engineering. It's comfortable, reliable, runs on any old sh**e oil, does 45mpg, has THAT badge on the bonnet, has the pre-Chrysler build quality. It cost me £2k to buy in 2004 as it belonged to a mate for 3 years previously who looked after it well. In all that time,it's needed 5 oil and filter changes, new pads and discs all round (£90), exhaust (£110), serpentine belt (£8), glow plugs (£18). Why buy a new-ish Mondeo/Vectra etc when you can run one of these for Fiesta money?

Another analogy-

You have a girl friend. All your family like her, your mates think she's a really nice but she's not their type, she has your supper ready when you get in from work, she's quiet and unassuming, when at work she methodically goes about her job with no fuss, she feels guilty if she spends more than £10 on herself in Primark, she hardly ever drinks and will drive you and your pals home without a complaint, rarely goes out and is back early when she does, the house is always clean and tidy, although she will have sex almost whenever you want ,it's pretty ordinary and conventional, she's always there when you need her and doesn't complain if you don't see her all weekend.

Basically, what it's like owning an old Merc. Safe and reliable but wish she'd let her hair down a bit more.

These two cars cover all the bases for me. The Alfa fills the 'Sporty' role and is soooo rewarding to drive. The Merc may be slow and heavy but it wafts along with the minimum of fuss and can sit on the driveway for weeks on end and always starts and runs perfectly.

A great combination of cars!!
