Only had the Alfa a week so bit early for a full comparison - all I can say so far it is a completely different drive to the Merc - more fun, more involvement with the car, much better seats and way better stereo and, I think, nicer looking.
The Merc was a great car but unfortunately can't say the same about my local dealers - V expensive and arrogant - made you feel like they were doing you a favour by letting you drive one of their cars!
Local Alfa dealer seemed pretty helpful and friendly (OK I know he was selling me a car!) but willing to bend on price and offered the best trade in on the Merc over the competition. Also test drove an Audi A3 and the Audi dealer seemed worse than the Merc dealers - put me off straight away. Looked briefly at the Vovo C30 coupe but no comparison to the Alfa.
