Thumbs Up mrqsystem

Hi, I have just joined AO and have found it immediatly useful. I am a proud owner of a black 156 V6. This car is in succession to a red 155 which sadly departed to the scrap heap a while ago. Thanks to the forum I have learnt of the rev counter gremlin which keeps the o/s rear tail light on which had bemused me for a while. Many thanks to those who wrote the relevant threads.

Re: mrqsystem

Whilst driving at about 70mph in my 156 2.5l V6 the engingine warning light flashed on the stopped after a few seconds. A couple of miles down the road the light flashed on again and before i could stop the engine died and I had to coast into the hard shoulder. I notice that there is some frayed material sticking through a crack in the cam cover. The cam belt appears not to have snapped, does anybody know what sort of damage is likely to have been caused. I am distinctly not amused as the belt was done 12 months/13,000 miles ago! any advice on what to next will be warmly recieved.

Did you change all the tensioners as well as just the belt? If a tensioner siezed it would rip the belt to shreds..

Re: mrqsystem

not sure, car was purchased 6 months after cam belt service was performed and i dont have the original invoice. i did contact the garage who did service and they have said to bring car in and they will investigate. Problem is car is in epsom and they are 60/70 miles away. cam belt looks like it is has not snapped, just frayed, would assume that if tensioner was not done at same time as belt then belt would have snapped before 13K miles? If it just need belt and tensioner i may as well bite bullet and pay local mechanic to do work. If engine has imploded then it would be worth paying to tow car to original garage and pursue them to rebuild engine at their cost?

Re: mrqsystem

If the cam belt has snapped/frayed and jumped a bit then it will have damaged the engine. I wouldn't try starting it anymore either..

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, trying looking here:

Re: mrqsystem

As to why it will have broken, chances are its just the belt that was replaced, and it has snapped/jumped off because the tensioner has siezed. I don't think you'll have much luck getting the original garage to rebuild the engine, if it was 13 months ago, especially as it wasn't you that paid them to do the work and you don't have a reciept for it, so nothing to state they gave a guarantee of any sort, other than under the Sale of Goods act, but you are probably out of the scope of the law anyway here, as so much time/milage has passed.

Did you buy the car from a private seller or trader?

Also, are the people who did the cambelt an Alfa garage? Or just a local garage?
