Re: F1 2008

Hey... I'm 'ard me..

But it seems to me that there is a natural mutal exclusiveness between "free" regulations and close racing. The more technology you have (or allow) the more difficult the "racing" becomes.

I bet if you took the current F1 grid and put them all in identical Fiat Seicento's the "race" would be miles more exciting... but whether anyone would want to watch it, is a different matter.

So we have to "dumb down" the spec' of F1 cars.. make them more basic and primitive (a completely de-regulated format would unfortunately only favour the teams with the biggest budgets). This seems to be the opposite of what the FIA propose for the future (green systems, regenerative doo-dahs and what have you).

Little wing, 3-litre v6 engines (manual box), common ECU, skinny tyres and cast iron discs. Gentlemen.. start your engines!

Or I been watchin' too much "Grand Prix"...

Re: F1 2008

Actually the removal of 'online' telemetry and one way radio...driver to pits only, would dramatically change the racing for the better . Follow up with removal of winglets on the body and we would actually have some real racing..As has been said before, currently we have one car and one driver who are 'controlled by a bank of technicians in the pits!
alternatively fit out all race tracks with water sprinklers connected to a 'random' weather program and let the racing begin

Don't know nor care what the Hondas will look like. Ultimately they'll be at the back of the grid

Re: F1 2008

F1 cars are sport.. they can be as polluting as they like! I think the CO2 from an entire season's racing is only the same as that produced by just one transatlantic Jumbo Jet flight.

On the other hand... flying the teams, cars, equipment and personnel all round the world 20 times a year is a tad more polluting... But again.. I think they worked it out.. it's miniscule in global terms (cf with everyone leaving their tv on standby for instance).

There was a 'green' supplement to F1 magazine a few months back, where they questioned whether football, globally, was a bigger polluter. Given the number of fans travelling to games, it might well be.

Re: F1 2008

Part of being a successful F1 driver is how you manage your off track dealings.

The best drivers tend to find themselves in the top group of teams at just the right point in their careers. They don't do that by luck.

IMO Jenson is a very talented driver, who has let himself down by making poor off track decisions.

He went to a poor Benneton/Renault team and had a dismal couple of seasons. A screw up.
He could have ended up back at Wiliams with a decent chassis and a strong BMW engine a few years back, and screwed that up
He stayed with BAR and morphed into Honda instead, that has proved to be a complete screw up.

Now IMO a top team wouldn't touch him with a bargepole, too many years scrapping in the midfield without ever showing consistant pace has done him no good whatsoever.

I hope I'm proven wrong, but I doubt he'll add to his single GP win.

Ogilvy the astronomer assured me were in no danger

He was convinced there could be no living thing on that remote, forbidding planet.....

It looks like Timo Glock will replace Ralf at Toyota in 2008.

But remember, he was forced to leave Williams because Uncle Frant signed Montoya - now you could argue that was Uncle Frank's screw up

Given the choice between a kid who looked like a half decent prospect, Button. And a champcar and indy 500 winner, and natural open wheel talent, Montoya, I'd probably have made the same decision
