I mentioned this a couple of times back on page 125 but it's really a different scenario.
At Ferrari, everyone was in agreement and working towards the same goal. The second driver was employed to be a second driver, supporting the lead driver when required. They were all doing their best to ensure one of their drivers to beat the drivers from all the other teams.
At McLaren, the suggestion is that one of the drivers is being punished for telling the truth to the FIA, and at the time the FIA said they would be keeping an eye out to see that didn't happen. The team's intention (if it were true) being that they want to make sure one of their drivers beats the other of their drivers, because they have a grudge against him and want to teach him a lesson.
So in one case, you have everyone happily doing the job they were employed to do - that's fair (at least within the team, disregarding the sport as a whole).
In the other case, you have one of the drivers and the team conspiring against the other driver - that's not fair.
I don't think the FIA care too much about what goes on internally in the teams regarding number 1 and number 2 drivers unless it interferes significantly with the sporting spectacle - the difference here is that Alonso claims he is being punished for speaking to the FIA, so they have to take an interest in it.
Like I said before, I don't believe Alonso's allegations, but I think having the extra scrutineer there is the only way for McLaren to prove their innocence.

Re: F1 2007 Season
Hypothetical question,
Is there any rule, law, contract, etc. to prevent McLaren replacing Alonso with De La Rosa in Brazil?
Surely that would be an internal McLaren decision or could the FIA interfere with it?
Just to clarify, I mean legal reasons, not moral
(I wouldn't touch that one with a 40foot barge pole)

Re: F1 2007 Season
[QUOTE=BigFoot;1332577]Interesting article about previous, last-race/three way fights in F1
1964
John Surtees finishes second in the Mexican Grand Prix after his Ferrari teammate Lorenzo Bandini moves over to let him take the place. Graham Hill, who had led the championship, fails to earn any points and ends up second in the standings. Jim Clark gets two points for fifth place, nowhere near enough to take the title.
Does your heart good, doesn't it? The good old days when men were men and not wannabe celebrities. When the honour of driving for the TEAM far outweighed any personal egos. All for one, and one for Ferrari. If only this was the Brazilian GP 1957 and not 2007.............. Alonso breaks down and limps into the pits; McLaren call in Hamilton and Alonso takes it over; Alonso races back through the field, only to JUST fail to climb high enough to deny Kimi (who was waived into the lead by Massa) winning the Championship. Imagining what the media would have to say about the race would keep me warm all through the winter

The only 'one' in the FIA motto is definitely not a car, but a person.

Who knows, down to the drivers' contracts with McLaren. But that's just never gonna happen.

Re: F1 2007 Season
I may be reading too much into this, but if we're not careful, I fear a very minor Ferrari vs 'the Assemblers' dichotomy beginning on this forum
Maybe we should split into two forums: The Constructors - the teams who design and built their own cars, and 'the Assemblers' - those who gather components from here and there, dependent upon sponsorship, and race their kit-cars.
Then the serious F1 followers would avoid any possible confusion with reality and delusions of grandeur by the 'Assemblers'
Just a friendly suggestion

I hear what your saying but as a bunch of Liers (sorry Lawyers) surely the FIA should not require anyone to prove there innocence.

Re: F1 2007 Season
I think we all agree. If FIA allows these special onsight scrutineers, then every other race you may end up seeing a few of these guys monitoring all the teams and make an ever greater farce of F1.
As ever, the question is, where do you draw the line? It would have been better not to have set such precedent.

Re: F1 2007 Season
Interesting timing. If it were Ferrari doing this (or indeed, Italian magistrates) we would be innundated with people slating them for trying to de stabilise things before an inportant event.........

Re: F1 2007 Season
Well we all know it's Ron who rules the McLaren team with his renowned iron, but always honest, fist - so if anyone thinks he'll take any notice of what Mercedes want, they should think again.
...............or, should they???? (Cue the Dick Barton theme)
