Minardi has confirmed that female racer Katherine Legge is to take part in a test for the team at Vallelunga next month.
The 25-year-old Brit, who has raced single-seaters since 2000, has spent the last two seasons competing in the United States - becoming the first female driver to win in the Toyota Atlantic Championship when she took victory in the opening race of the season at Long Beach.
Legge followed that win up with further wins in Edmonton and San Jose as she finished third in the championship in her rookie season before she joined Champ Car World Series co-owner Kevin Kalkhoven in visiting the Belgian Grand Prix in early September where a meeting with Minardi owner Paul Stoddart led to the opportunity to test the F1 machine.
"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to drive the Minardi," Legge said. "It has been a dream and an ambition of mine to drive a Formula One car since I was a little girl.
"I am extremely grateful to Paul Stoddart and Kevin Kalkhoven for giving me this opportunity, and I am now focused on trying to impress and do a professional job in the test."
Stoddart said he felt that Legge has done enough over the course of the season to warrant her chance to test an F1 car and said he had no hesitation in giving her the opportunity.
"We have been watching Katherine's progress for some while now, and with her outstanding performances in the Toyota Atlantic Championship this season, we felt she was clearly deserving of a chance to experience a Formula One car," he said. "We have always said that if a sufficiently talented woman racing driver arrived on the scene, who appeared capable of handling the performance of an F1 car, we would have no hesitation in giving her an opportunity to show what she could do.
"I believe Katherine has done more than enough to warrant that chance."
