Uconnect SatNav accuracy

I'm rather unimpressed with the SatNav on my 2015 G QVline. It's the Uconnect system. It quite often says "route recalculation" when I've followed its directions exactly, and sometimes has an odd way of describing an approaching roundabout - for example the other day it told me to "turn left" as I approached one from about 50 yards away and then immediately followed this with "take the third exit", meaning that I ended up in completely the wrong lane. The map display was correct as I found afterwards but I prefer to look out the windscreen at junctions! Yesterday in Darlington it told me to "turn left and then turn right" when aproaching a fork in the road, when it should have said "turn half left" or similar.

It has attempted to direct me down a cart track in Weardale and then when I've corrected its mistake and found the correct road it told me not to take it. Approaching Aylesbury a week or two ago it expected roundabouts where there have to my knowledge never been any, and then told me to "turn right" when there IS a roundabout.

On the M1 recently it told me to "keep right on M1" and when I did so it said "route recalculation". I'm starting seriously to mistrust it. Its insistence on prefixing every direction with "please" is slightly irritating as well ;)

My old cheapo Garmin standalone GPS very rarely got anything wrong and I'm considering using that instead.

Anyone else had such issues?

Otto,

I guess the system in your Giulietta is same as my Mito.

I'm not that happy either. Part of issues such as these is down to the quality of the map data.

I struggled getting the SATNAV software version updated by my dealer, once that was done I am able to update the map data myself.

Previous posts give info on those updates.

The system is TomTom. I do find the TomTom app on my iPhone is better that that on the car, not very pleasing.

You have use map upgrades supplied by Tom Tom and they are likely to charge, unless they consider the age of the car entitles you to free upgrade(s).

Their website is quite helpful.

Snap! Ours has done every single one of those things - even though we're on the other side of the world - and for your interest, the maps for the Giulietta are Garmin-based, even though the unit in the Mito is the same, it runs different software. Infuriating, when you realise no map updates are possible, even from a dealer.

I'm going to take out the uConnect and replace it with a Sony unit that does Carplay/Android Auto. Even though it is aftermarket, I find its presentation aesthetically more pleasing; and it is likely to be functionally better too. Although there is nothing wrong with the uConnect hardware, the software and lack of support really lets it down in my opinion. Wish I'd read your post before I went to the trouble of finding a 'late model' Giulietta just for uConnect ;)
