iPod in 166.

Hi,

as I already posted in another thread, I very recently got my dongle to finally work in my 166. This means that it is possible to connect an ipod (using a suitable cable) to the RCA connectors of the car audio system (that the CDC normally uses). I already received some signals that more people are interested. So I'd like to find out how many people are possibly interested in such a dongle.

I'm thinking of doing 2 versions:
1) Aux-in only. This means that you can connect an external audio source like an ipod or another mp3-player to the audio plugs of the cd-changer. It also means that the cd-changer can no longer be used in your car.
2) Aux-in + ipod control. With this version, you should be able to charge your ipod and control your ipod through the ICS. Again, the cd-changer can no longer be used in your car.

I'm currently working on cleaning up Version 1 (to facilitate "mass-production" ), and starting with the implementation of Version 2, so that's gonna take a little longer.

This is an open-source project, because it is actually based on an open-source project so I have no choice, but I am willing to sell kits (either DIY or pre-assembled) in the very near future. The kit will contain all necessary hardware + instructions how to install the thing in your car. I'm not yet sure about prices, though. Shouldn't be too bad, of course.

Re: iPod in 166.

oooo - i'd be interested....especially in V2

Is there any way you could have a change over switch between the dongle and the cdc? Although once the ipod control is up and running a cdc will be pretty much redundant!

Re: iPod in 166.

I would be a definite customer - provided you can get your dongle-thingy to work with a 156 GTA stereo! The stereo is a Blaupunkt, and I imagine the wiring would work in an identical manner.

Re: iPod in 166.

Hi! Would be very interested in V1! Have 10GB of music on my MP3 player that I'm dying to play direct through the ICS rather than through a tape adaptor where the quality is rubbish!!

I'm assuming I don't need a CD changer to use this - just the data and L/R audio cables in the boot from the ICS?

Re: iPod in 166.

Great stuff. Just need to have a look for the cables now. Hopefully they're there. If not does anyone out there have a spare ICS to CD changer data and audio lead?

Cheers, Cluffstarr

Re: iPod in 166.

I am also greatly interested in any version, I just want to plug my iPod in. I don't even care if it works with the ICS , I would use it even if I could just plug it in an Audio-In jack or RCA that would be nicely hidden somewhere.

This is small enough to hide anywhere in your car! It measures 43x54mm (1,69"x2,09").

Re: iPod in 166.

Will you be able to keep the CD changer plugged in and have a switch/sensor for when the mp3 player is connected?

No, however, I might be able to integrate that into V2 (but then it would only work with an ipod). I'll think about it.

It's possible to upgrade V1 to V2 by adding a little hardware and upgrading the software (when that's ready).

Hi, the V1 kit should cost no more than €40 (~£26), and if you want it assembled+tested it will set you back something like €55 (~£36) excl. S&H. It depends somewhat on my own suppliers of parts...

Re: iPod in 166.

If you could get version 2 to work i would almost agree to bear your children.

Right now i have disconnected my factory stereo and connected my ipod directly to a standard Clarion cdplayer in my boot. The cdplayer is then connected to two separate amps for my new Infinity reference door speakers and a JBL 12 inch bass. The sound is breathtaking but my world would be bright and sunny at all times if i could control my ipod using the factory stereo.

Let me know when and how much!!!

Count me on V2. You should make a tidy sum from this...

Re: iPod in 166.

Hi Sandyman, dongle looks very good, and good quality. After the hassle I have had and still having trying to fit the CD changer, I may just give up and go for the donlge and Ipod/MP3 player. However I do not have the cables from the ICs to the Cd changer so I would have to make a cable to fit. Do you know what connectors are on the back of the ICS for connecting your dongle to, and also connecting the audio in, cheers
