Ok - so I had an offer I couldn't refuse: a Connect Sat Nav for £50
I bought it because I liked the look of it, and wanted to upgrade my dashboard, basically.
...but it seems I've bought a whole can of worms! It all plugs in, and lights and stuff come on, but doesn't do a lot else.
Can anyone possibly help me with the answers to the following:
1) Is a startup disc required?
no, only required when/if you want to use the navigation
2) Can anyone tell me where I can get a copy of the instruction manual?
For manual, see http://aftersales.fiat.com/ELUM/main.aspx?page=Alfa_190_147_Connect_Supplements_Co nnect&nodeID=190202908&languageID=2&markID=2&model ID=2000002&valID=&prodID=&tipologiaID=190202902&me nutipologiaID=190202908&annoID=2007
3) Does the thing need to be programmed to my car?
no, not possible. You need to make an additional connection for a switched +12 to connector A4, which is not present in the loom in standard form
4) Does it need a code?
yes, probably
5) Does it need a cage?
yes, the custom alfa connect cage
6) Do I really need to cut out the separator bar between original head unit and slidey drawers, or is there a more less permanent method?
yes, you need to cut out the plastic separation bar between the two 1din openings to create a 2din opening
You also need a GPS antenna and a GSM antenna, which you can just mount under the dash, on top of the 2din cage. easiest is to get a combined gsm/gps antenna, available from ebay fairly cheap
example:

You will get a blinking odometer, as the BC will not recognise the connect. However, everything will work
If the blinking odometer bothers you, you need to switch on the switched +12 on A4 after the system check is finished (takes 4 seconds after ignition switch-on). You can do this by either adding a manual switch in the A4 lead, or automatically by adding a time-delay relay set for 4 seconds in the A4 lead.
