Tyre dilemma…..

For my Ford Focus, 60 mile each way daily motorway commute.

Fronts are Michelin HP, cracking long life tyre, 5mm and 3mm.

Rears are Pirelli’s, but now on the legal limit.

Considering buying 2 Michelin’s for the front, and put both the 5mm and 3mm tyres onto the rear.

How would having good tread at the front and getting low tread on the read affect the handling, for a sensible motorway commute?

Another option would be 3 new tyres for close to £300…..!!!!

When the rear 3mm gets close to legal limit I would rotate fronts to rear, and buy a new pair for the front.

By the way, the 5mm Michelin was fitted last January, and done around 30K miles, so pretty happy with the tyre, just not the £90 price tag!!

New tyres should be put on the rear of the car anyway. And besides, by the time the fronts need replacing, which could be a while still given the wear rates vs miles done, you'll have less wear on the new rears because of them not being the driving wheels (than the opposite).

More worrying than deciding where to put the new ones I think is why one front is more worn than the other. Unless the reason it's just that they've previously not been changed at the same time.

Have a look at Low-rolling resistance tires - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

1.5-4.5% fuel saving on your 120 mile round trip commute must add up to a tidy sum every year.

Good points.

I had a puncture on the front, hence changed at different times.

Plumped for three new tyres, Kwik Fit have price matched an online firm, so 'just' yikes - £260 for the three.

The Michelin is a low-rolling tyre and lasts very well, so all being well, happy days
