Hmmm Steps to restart a parked up car

The day has finally come where I've decided to try and fix the old Punto that has been parked up for the past two years.
Basically we parked it up at me parents house when we upgraded our other car - now obviously the battery is dead and no matter how hard/long you charge the battery it just wont start up which is of no fault to itself.
Anyway are there any steps needed in getting the car started besides replacing the battery? Will the fuel in it still be good? i basically want to start it and drive it the 5km into town to be serviced.
Before it was parked up the temp would go up pretty high without the fans kicking in - there was no loss of coolant and no mayo colour in the oil. So all i can think of is either the thermostat or the fan relay is faulty.
Its a 1999 Fiat Punto 60 - grand little car though those old Puntos

New battery and about 10 litres of fuel should do it. If it still won't go then take the plugs out and make sure they are good and not wet.

cheers Pud, stupid question but are the plugs in the old punto fairly easy to remove? anyway will give it a go and hope for the best - it tries to start when its connected to another car but lacks that kick to get it going. Fingers crossed

As pud says, a charged batt and a splash of fresh gas should be enough. If the fans aren't kicking in, it's likely to be the fan switch or possibly the fan motor itself. Check the fuse first. If it's blown, try another. If that blows too, it's probably the motor that's seized so try spinning the fan blades.

If the fuse is still there intact, try finding and removing the wiring connector from the switch. You should be able to bridge the contacts in the connector and the fan will run all the time.

Cheers Keithy, hoping that by tomorrow the car will be up and running again. Im afraid of what the oil will look like! should probably throw a dash of oil into the engine cause im certain the oil has settled in the sump and therefore there probably is no oil in the crank.

I recently restarted two cars that had been stood for six years - in both cases I just attached jump leads to a good battery and they fired up within a second or so - so I wouldn't worry about the fuel "going off". For peace of mind you might want to pull the leads off the coil pack whilst you spin the engine over a few times to ensure you get some oil pressure....if there is oil in the sump up to the correct level, then adding fresh oil won't do anything.

It's handy to put more oil in, just instantly before you fire the beast up... you'll have a lot of new oil in the cam lobe wells and at the top of the engine.. It'll take a fair few seconds for the oil pump to lift the old/sludgy oil up there if it's all drained down to the sump and turned to tar..

It's worth a half-litre or so...
