I think I'd have a 964 911 if I could get a nice one in budget.

A TVR, either a Cerbera 4.5 or a Tuscan.

Having just bought a "toy" - an old ex MOD Landrover 90 with all the off road bits fitted, I would suggest one of these. I haven't driven the GTA in 2 weeks now - this is just so much fun. Been doing a little bit of off roading (lots more planned) and it really is great fun - all at <30mph!
Add in the fact that you can just throw anything into it, throw it into anything and not worry it is fantastic. Had a new exhaust fitted, new cam belt fitted, new headlight and various other little MOT bits all for sub £300 last week - parts are cheap as chips.
Might not be the obvious choice - but I love it and thoroughly recommend to anyone (as long as you have easy access to the countyside...)
Silver 156 GTA SW, Q2, Koni FSD's, Eibach springs and anti-roll bars, CDA induction, re-map, Wizard/Pud exhaust - fantastic!

Good call by Pud , though I'd lean towards a 964C4 myself.
Someone near me has an Esprit Turbo, it makes an unholy din reminiscent of a 4 cylinder Kawasaki on choke.
I'm going to have to go away and think about this, alfabeat could well have a point about having fun without endangering the driving licence.

Also consider Caterhams, Westfields and the Vauxhall VX220 Turbo.

Is this hypothetical or do you have a windfall to spend?
If it's a real windfall and may need to be liquidated to become cash at a later date then there's a lot to be said for a Caterham. If someone gave me £15K to spend I'd be considering residuals and it's likely future value.

I suppose it depends what your current "daily driver" is doesn't it? If you already have something quite sporty, then you need something totally different (like in my case - I didn't want something else that would struggle on our roads, cost a load to insure and need constant fettling and looking after.)
On the other hand, if your daily driver is a 1.6 focus or something, then yes you need some speed/exotica in your life.
For me this has a certain appeal...

That too!
I like the VX220, regardless of the fact that it is an Elise underneath, I think its a good looking car. And i fit in them, i dont fit in an Elise. Im hardly massive either

I've worked with/for two Elise owners but I've yet to blag a ride in one so I don't know if I fit.
There's an NA VX220 on autotrader for £5200.

Like the others said it is really a Lotus.
I wouldn't have a normally aspirated one though, it is a very average engine which sounds awful.
They do handle well though, if a bit prone to understeer but as I understand it they were deliberately made like this by fitting narrow front tyres.
My dad had a Lightening edition for a while.
