Read about that earlier, repeat set to record.

Not that it's relevant to me

No. me neither, but it's worth a giggle useful for our heavy-fuel-oil burning AO brethren.

A simple solution would be don't do so many short journeys, and ensure your car gets a 'long run' once a week.....

Silly

Not at all surprised. Dealers really should ask questions and advise correctly. The majority of car buyers have little knowledge of the drawbacks of diesel. Its crazy anyone restricted to urban driving owning a diesel. My wifes journey to work, although 16 miles and a fair bit of open road would kill a DPF, because she also does a fair part of the trip in a crawl.

No worries Nev, we all know your views, and I have to agree, if I could afford the consumption I would also have a 1750TBI instead of the 1.9 Jtdm. But 20k (miles) per annum I could not afford the fuel, and I would hate paying all that extra tax.

There can't be many diesel cars with DPF problems. Every one I ever see tries to show me that his Tdi is faster than my 3 litre Alfa. (VAG drivers take note).

Lmao, they do that with every car, fella tried doing it to me one night it just rained so the roads where geasey and there was two set of lights I knew he would go for the second set of lights as the road is longer and straighter so at the first set dropped the clutch quickly and floored it at the first set of lights and well it lit up the wheels and hopped off the limiter he didn't bother trying the second set of lights lol.

When did Alfa first use DPF's in their engines?

With the right kit, the vag diesels are lethal. My seat Leon fr+ 1.9 diesel had 250bhp and 400lb ft of torque. 1st gear is useless, 2nd and 3rd would be just crazy.
Vag have the exact same problem with dpfs. Most tunning garages offer a decat and map the lights out.
Wasn't it EU law that made the dpf mandatory for all diesels?

Yup, because cities were becoming choked with particles and the incidents of
respiratory problems in the population were sky-rocketing with the switch to DERV instigated by goverment
fuel tax policies.

(DERV should have been banned for private use and tax dropped on petrol instead of
this DPF band-aid non-solution. )

I watched it & I was thinking to myself "who buys a diesel car anyway just for short journeys? I thought the whole point of buying a diesel is that it's economical on long journeys" but obviously I was wrong. Give me a petrol anyday. On the note of VAG drivers, I completely agree

I saw this the other day. WTF. I can't beleive it has even been brought up? whinging complaining morons who had problems with the DPF. All you need to do is take it for a drive and it will clear itself you idiots. And what is all this tosh about them saying they weren't told. It's in the sodding hand book. If you actually spent 5 minutes familurising yourself with it, which I might add the dealer will tell you to do then you would be aware that you need to take it for long run every now and again to clear it. If you can't be bothered to read up on your car then you deserve all you get

I think that's the point. A small DERV "city" car is unlikely
to cover enough miles for a DPF to be effective.

So is an illogical beast. (in terms of cost + the environment/city pollution.)

TwinAir FTW!

It doesn't take long to come up with a better solution
(cost-wise, engineering-wise, environmental & health impact-wise) than a DPF.

(DERV ban on private vehicles FTW! )

I would agree with the derv ban.

I also don't agree with the fact they are much cheaper to run than petrols when you take all other factors into consideration.

If you buy used a petrol could work out cheaper due to the depreciation and lower purchase price.

There are plenty threads in the Tech Lounges which suggest that some people don't ever read the Owner's Manual

The "Hidden Features of my Alfa" threads are an example
