Micro Fibre Cloth.
Can the knowledgable amongst you please tell me what the best use for a Microfibre cloth is? I have had conflicting advice from Autoglym and others. One said use it only for drying after shampooing the car, another said, no way, only for polishing after applying polish with a cotton cloth. I have the Meguiers Dou Fibre Cloth.

Re: Micro Fibre Cloth.
Polishing, ok personally always use a genuine chamois,(not sheepskin posing as such) for leathering off. :

Re: Micro Fibre Cloth.
I would say that the micro fibre is better for polishing after applying polish/wax/etc..
for drying use a waffle weave or chamois.
Im a big Meguiars fan

Re: Micro Fibre Cloth.
I use a silly £12 Meguires towel for drying mine (it's better than a chamois in that it'll dry the whole car without needing to wring it!), then microfibre cloths just for polish / detailing products

Re: Micro Fibre Cloth.
I own about 4 or 5 in various grades of softness. The harshest one I use for washing, and I use a nice soft one for drying off. I then use another 2, one for applying wax and then another for taking it off. I use the other one for the interior leather and I use a cotton flannel for washing my alloys. Hope that helps!

Re: Micro Fibre Cloth.
Do people use the microfibre cloths for applying the polish? Or just for polishing it off?

I do. I use one side/half to apply the polish, the other side/half to wipe it off again.

Re: Micro Fibre Cloth.
There's something special about using a genuine chamois that I'm sure the older members on AO will recall? :

Well, I'm an older member (that sounds a bit rude....) and I now swear by microfibre drying towels. Far better than any chamois for leaving a streak free finish IMO. There are microfibre drying, polishing and buffing towels if you want to be really anal about it. Mind you, they don't quite have the smell and feel of real chamois....
And do check out that Autopia link above, very informative.
Cheers,
Nigel

Re: Micro Fibre Cloth.
Keep your Chamois soft and flexible by washing in Lux soapflakes, or a bar of Sunlight soap. Viva Chamois. :

Re: Micro Fibre Cloth.
I use a wash mit when cleaning the car, followed by chammy, polishing cloth for applying polish and a microfibre for removing the polish.

Re: Micro Fibre Cloth.
I use a waffle weave for drying, polishing is done by machine, I apply sealants with a sponge and normal MF cloth for removing residue.

Re: Micro Fibre Cloth.
Use foam pads for applying polish. Using a microfibre is just a waste.

The paint on my 156 is ultra hard, even using 4" pads with the PC nothing happens to the swirls. Therefore I need to save up and buy a rotary

Re: Micro Fibre Cloth.
Think we are on the same path? Random Orbital polishers? Same motion as DA sanders? Fine I suppose, so long as it is absolutely grit free. Just a speck can be a nasty nuisance to put it mildly. Plus you need to watch for rapid burn through on the edges. Personally prefer straight line hand polishing. However, leave the choice to the individual? :

Re: Micro Fibre Cloth.
being a professional, use it only for polishing off and cleaning, not wax off / on, same for window cleaning ~(but use for window polish)

Re: Micro Fibre Cloth.
I use MF towels for removing polish/sealant/wax residues, cleaning windows and interior plastics. I sometimes use MF applicator for applying sealants. Waffle-weave for drying after wash.

Snap. Tried the PC with a 4" SFX cutting pad and Meguiars #83 on my 156 this morning with little effect on the swirl marks.

Interesting. I just spent Saturday clay barring, polishing and waxing my GTA (same colour as yours btw) and got a reasonable finish without using a PC. I have to say the original swirling wasn't too bad but as I currently couldn't afford the £200 or so to get a pro in to do the swirl removal with a PC I decided to the best I could with hand polishing and waxing. My local detailing expert recommended Einszett Waxpolish Soft as a glaze which covers swirls and imperfections to some degree. I used this and topped it off with Collinite wax and was pretty impressed with the finish. It's not perect but definitely a lot better than it was. You might want to try the Einszett Waxpolish (if you haven't already....).
Cheers,
Nigel
