Honest John`s web pages now have a in depth breakdown of countrywide MOT results. unfortunately some types of our favourite cars don't far so well.

Question, would the results shown put you off buying the car that you had spent hours looking at images, trawling through reviews, owners forums etc?

They wouldn't put me off.. but it's not good to see poor results. It just encourages the stereotypes about Alfas being unreliable.

Publishing the "results" is pretty pointless though... It just proves that new cars that lead a pampered life under a car cover are more likely to pass an MOT than a decade-old car which is parked in the street...

Well, thanks HJ.. that really increased the sum of human knowledge...

I also think that many Alfas are kept running longer than other cars and quite simply this means you just get more failures as the car is flirting with death every year.. patched up and run some more... whereas a lesser make suffering from no real enthusiasm for it in the owner may have just been sent to the Great Scrapyard in the Sky...

I thought it was pretty interesting to be honest.

Looking through the data can give some idea as to how long a car is going to last...

Check out how many BMW's and VW's fail the MOT on body related issues in their older years compared to the number of Fords etc...

If you are going to buy an older car as a runabout it could save you time welding a car up.
