Try the RAC route planning site - gives estimated journey times. And keep up with traffic info on radio or mobile phone.

The M40 is normally an easier drive than the M1, you even get people moving over from the outside lane !!

When I travel back from North Wales I use the M40/M25 anticlockwise and prefer it to the M1/M25 clockwise.
The only 'holdup' is normally the variable speed limits where they tend to **** it up by constantly changing the limit causing a concertina effect.
