Strathclyde dont offer courses - you need to take the points.

Got the fine through this morning... 3 points and £60 Suppose I deserve it and it could have been worse.

Well accepted that man. I have posted more than once about speeding - I have been done twice - both on A roads and both times over 90mph.

3\4 points £60 and £150 (96mph). I knew what I was doing and fully accepted both counts. That was 4 years ago so now my licence is clear. I don't expect this to last as I still drive in the same way.

Bottom line - we all know what we do and if we choose to speed we sometimes get caught - and like Alfa Terrier - I'd like to think we accept the consequences of our actions. I realise that we might think that the law is "wrong" but - we know what it is so unless it changes - realise it will apply to you.

Re: First Speeding Ticket in 10 Years!

we have a speed cam outside work. Pointless one on a straight road with minimal junctions but has a 30 cam on it.

When I got my last new car before the alfa, I was coming out of work fiddling for a CD from the glovebox and saw the cam go off in my wing mirror. Nightmare. That took me to 12 points!!!

The night before court was harsh, Up till then I felt certain I would be ok as work had written me a letter and I didn't live in a bus served area. I sat on my bed the night before and the weight of the world came over me. In less than 24 hours i might not be able to drive...

Thankfully I was allowed to keep my licence and spent the next 2 years driving like a priest until some older points came off.

I drive slower most of the time these days anyway and down to 6 points. 2010 before clean. Lets hope i make it!!!

I hate to say it but you are still not risk free at 79mph.
Last year I got my first ticket by a camera on a bridge coming down the M6 just past Tebay. £60 and 3 points for doing........79mph, doh! There's speeding and there's speeding, admitadly I was in the wrong. However the thing that get's me is I recently saw one of those UK police tv programs and this guy got pulled over for doing 94 on the motorway, got a talking to and then had some friendly banter with the officer and then sent on his way scott free.

Re: First Speeding Ticket in 10 Years!

thankfully & touch wood, after 11 years of driving i've not been stopped for speeding once (which means i'm very lucky!) However, over here in Ireland, if you get caught speeding (even if you are pulled over for it) you must receive written notification. Then you'd normally fill in the form, send them a cheque & 2 point on your licence (thats 2 points no matter what speed you're doing), however if you choose to ignore the letter, they'll then summons you to court. However since the original notification is sent by ordinary post (but the summons is registered), the Gardai have no proof you've received it (& the law states you MUST!), so you go to court, tell the judge you didn't receive the notification & the case is struck out, no fine, no points! I've never had to do that, but i know some people who have!

Re: First Speeding Ticket in 10 Years!

Thought I would update you... licence duly returned by the constabulary with the 3 points on it. Quick service, quite impressive but won't be referring any family or friends to them.

I was reading the "caught by the fuzz" thread the other week (thread now closed) where there was interesting debate about speeding. Well, since I got done I have changed the way I drive but I must say that I find it really difficult and less enjoyable.

The journey I got caught on was a 300 mile trip between Greenock and Sheffield. I don't speed on A roads or B roads but I have usually cruised at 85-90mph on the motorway when safe to do so (hence getting caught at 86 by a van on a bridge). Since the fine, I have done the same journey twice more but within all legal speed limits and it has been an absolute nightmare for the following reasons:

1 - Continually get blocked in on the inside lane with those in the middle lane not reading the traffic ahead and letting you out despite indicating

2 - People speeding up when you overtake them at 70mph so you end up alongside them like my pet hate of lorries trying to overtake

3 - People tailgating you and harrasing you to get out of their way

Even slightly increasing the cruising speed to 75mph has little impact on these irritations, it is only when you get to 80-85mph that things become less stressful!

I think the 70mph limit is out dated and would welcome a move towards the way the French do it on their motorways which is equivelent to around 85mph in the dry and 60mph in the wet to the best of my knowledge.

I would also like to see some better interpretation of the rules by the police. I agree that there needs to be rules as otherwise there is anarchy. I do believe however that there needs to be a common sense approach to implementing these rules, punishing those that put others in any danger whatsoever and maybe simply warning others who bend the rules but at no risk.

I am convinced that had I been stopped by a police car, I could have at least have tried to reason with an officer, sadly that option is taken away when caught on camera (who wants to go to court to challenge, I certainly don't).

Re: First Speeding Ticket in 10 Years!

Fully agree with that. Either drive at 60mph with the lorries or 80 with the cars. 70mph is a nightmare !!!
