Broken Tom Tom

The plastic ring on the socket for the RDS traffic receiver has come off my Tom Tom.
This probably (but I don't know for sure) happened when it flung itself off the windscreen at one point during my journey today.

You can still, with a bit of care, plug the receiver in successfully by putting the guide ring onto the plug itself and then inserting it the right way round, but it's a pain.

So. Do I have a leg to stand on if I take it back to Halfords (bought last month) and ask for a replacement? Does the validity of my claim depend on whether it did come off through falling off the screen, or do I have some justification in stating that it was their crappy mount which made it fall off?

Re: Broken Tom Tom

Did you buy it with a credit card?
Some have 90 days insurance against

Re: Broken Tom Tom

Snap - had exactly the same issue and what a freakin palaver it causes. For some reason TomTom and their retailers see themselves as being outside of UK Consumer Law. They give 14 days for retailers to offer a replacement - outside of that they appear to have persuaded the retailers to deny all claims for replacement and send owners in the direction of TomTom themselves for a repair.

Having run myself ragged trying to sort out a replacement I ended up buying a replacement and was about to claim via my credit card (suggested by the Manager of the store concerned) when I came across a 90day no-quibble return policy for the airport where I bought it. Retailer still tried to wriggle out of it saying TomTom's were exempt but held my ground and got a full refund (inc postage).

Good luck

Re: Broken Tom Tom

I did buy it with a credit card, but I can find nothing to suggest my Egg Money card has that facility unfortunately.

K3lvc, You had exactly the same damage caused in exactly the same way? What a pain.

Re: Broken Tom Tom

Assuming you're talking about the rubber/plastic spacer that holds the traffic module in place then yes but I don't know how mine happened. On a positive I've had the replacement for 11 weeks with daily use and no issues.

Assuming you spent over £100 your credit cad company has joint liability. If the thing's faulty/damaged and the retailer won't play then go to Egg.

Egg only seem to have delivery insurance. (I really need to cancel that card then. )

Re: Broken Tom Tom

Can you not say it broke when you were plugging it in? Flatly deny it has fallen (not ethical I know but then again they arent likely to be either!).

I bought an alternative mount from amazon as the one that came with my Tomtom one XL is total pants.

Re: Broken Tom Tom

I'm going to try taking it back tomorrow.

Pr, what alternative mount did you use? It was the Tom Tom alternative mount kit which caused this problem. There's nowhere flat enough on the dash for the windscreen-alternative disc to stick, so it soon fell off there, so I used it on the windscreen. But the length of it seemed to mean that it vibrated more, and therefore dropped off.
Maybe I should have lick-n-sticked after all.
Silly of me to not want gob all over my windscreen.

Anyway, now I have the mount from the kit, I can start looking into other things I can attach it to, like the Kuma.

Re: Broken Tom Tom

Hard luck Bazza - hope you get a replacement OK.

As for alternative mounting kit - get a Kuda console:

http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/ice-a...-or-phone.html (Kuda Console - Satnav, ipod or phone)

Not cheap but for a dashboard appendage it is quite classy.

Re: Broken Tom Tom

Good result to start with - went to Halfords and they replaced the unit without any qualms. Apparently over a month would have made it more complicated.
I have another small issue though - I had the very latest maps on the old unit (as you get a code to download them with the unit), but I haven't got those on this one. They're on the computer, but it won't let me download them to the TomTom, obviously because I could be trying to use them on multiple units.
I have emailed TomTom and explained the situation, let's see what they do.

Re: Broken Tom Tom

Bazza, this is the alt mount I bought..........

Amazon.co.uk: TomTom ONE XL Alternative Mount Kit: Tomtom: Electronics & Photo

I have found it locks to the windscreen like a limpet, no worries there. It does vibrate quite annoyingly so I always position it on top of the "infocentre" so it doesnt vibrate. It is a touch long for the GTA but is perfect in the GFs new Bravo

That's the exact one I have, which fell off.
Do you lick-n-stick?

Re: Broken Tom Tom

NOt usually, just push it on and lock it in place (I stick it on the windscreen by the way). I don't think I could pull it off once I lock it on

Re: Broken Tom Tom

Fraser: Unfortunately they don't list the Kuda for the later model 156. I've got a suspicion thought that the only difference is the presence of the infocentre. If this is the case then I'd be quite happy for the satnav to cover the screen a little.
I've emailed pdaplus to see if they can shed any light.

If they don't there's always the Brodit Proclip. Works the same way and is cheaper - just doesn't look as good. They're bound to make one for the facelift 156.

Re: Broken Tom Tom

I was tempted by the brodit, until I realised it has an arm which goes back to the glove box. That must look terrible
If the Kudu is a no-go, I might look into one of the universal mounts which attaches to the side of the radio.

Re: Broken Tom Tom

Just got a reply:

"Good morning James,

Thank you for your interest.

Officially the console fits only the Alfa 156 10/97 – 03/02.

But if you enlarge the picture you can see for yourself if it will fit.

For you it will we easier to check if it will fit."

I think for the last sentence larguage is getting in the way a little. I think he's suggesting I buy it, try it and return it if it doesn't work. What does everyone think? Am I interpreting correctly?

Re: Broken Tom Tom

I think you're interpreting it correctly and I'd say it's worth a shot. After all all they did in the facelift was replace the forward facing top vents with the display unit - I don't think any of the dimensions changed.

Re: Broken Tom Tom

Cheers Fraser. I have decided (after opening another more specific thread) that I'm going to go ahead. I'm waiting for a refund into my paypal account though, then I'll use that money.
