pro's and con's 156
ok im very intresting in buying my very own 156 diesel but i dont no much about them?????
like every car on the road to day im sure they will have there problems, but how many problems do they have?????
so what makes it worth while owning an alfa???
come on boys and girls teach me a thing or two about these cars....
oh and another thing..... how come the 2.4 jtd's are cheaper than any of the other diesels they do????? is there a problem with them or is it just a fact that they arnt as good on the dino juice as the 1.9's are????

Re: pro's and con's 156
check service to date inc cam belt
frequent oil checks
if its re-mapped check the clutch
leather / lowered will cost a little more
style/flair/passion - everything 99% of cars do not have

Understeer quite badly and eat front tyres when pushed regularly.
However, don't push too hard, and get a nice smooth ride
If you can, get a silver 'un, with the Red Leather

Why does everyone say that about the 2.4 JTD but never mention the weight of the V6's?

Dunno.. 2.4 and V6 weigh similar amounts I think..
Understeer can be cured with a Q2, as for tyres.. Its only money

1.9 handles SLIGHTY better but that doesnt mean the 2.4 handles badly though.
There is something rather special about the noise in the 2.4
my advice...remapped 1.9 unless you are lucky enough to find a 20v (like me !)

And a Ti as well.. What a rare beast!
The reasons why my choice would be a remapped 16v, having owned a 2.4 10v previously:
- Sump is too low on the 2.4 10/20v. With low suspension, you risk knackering it on bumps. I cracked mine, luckily managed to seal it. I would always worry about this with the 20v as well, but it isn't an issue with the 16v.
- Extra weight in the engine bay isn't what anyone wants. This affects my V6 as well, but a twinny was out of the question for me, not torquey enough. The 16v JTD would address this issue.
- You can't fit a Q2 in the 20v gearbox - a different LSD might be available but normally LSDs cost £1k plus, then you have fitting to consider as well. Q2 at £300 (was £250 when I bought it) is still a bargain and transforms the 156.
Although, in choosing a 16v I would always be dissappointed with the sound. The 5-pot is much nicer sounding, by a country mile.

Back on the road: Alfa 156 3.0 24v V6, Silver with red leather, Q2 diff, GTA Teledials, headlights & inlet manifold, AutoDelta carbon intake,
decat pipe and SuperSprint rear box, FK coilovers, Dastek Unichip - my 245bhp beast!
Gone but not forgotten: Alfa 156 2.4 JTD Veloce, Vela Blu, Angel 'mad map' & BMC CDA, Ferodo DS2500s - the fastest tractor in town!

what he said , its dead true 5pot diesels sound great but donr handle quite as well as the 1.9 diesel, also due to weight do wear out steering and suspension a bit quicker.
there was a time and i would never have looked at a ''taxi engine'' ie diesel but even with price premium on fuel i still like 'em. Loads of torque, fantastic acelearation between 50 and 80mph.
get one you wont be dissapointed, if possible go for a velocce with leather, 6 speed box and lowered suspension oh and 17" wheels. you wont be sorry.

Re: pro's and con's 156
i have a remapped 1.9 tdi mjet 16v 156. why buy one? ok ignore everything i and anyone else say. but do do one thing GO DRIVE ONE.
that will tell you all you need to know.
as with any alfa, front suspension components are considered consumables, front tyres wear very fast if you drive fast. i do. front roll bar bushes...blah blah.theres loads of things that go, but there is on any car if you want to keep it A1 condition.
go drive one then come back here and tell US why you want one!
good luck mate!

I can rectify that The V6 is 30kg lighter than the 2.4, the 1.9 is 80 kg lighter than the 2.4, and the 1.8 is 120kg lighter than the 2.4
Oh and as std the 1.8 t spark is quicker to do a standing kilometre by .2 of a second than the std 2.4, V6 is 2.9 seconds quicker
1.9 is the same 0-62 as the 1.6ts btw
However if you want to tune the engines the diesel starts to look a better bet, but it doesn't sound anywhere near as good

Re: pro's and con's 156
Fitting the right tyres to a 2.4 (Conti Premium Contact 2 from trial and error) goes a long way to helping the understeer and wear rate, although thats still not frugal, and as others say you dont get much change from a set of front bushes, BUT:
It sounds great, not V6 great, but different
The ecconomy is amazing, better than a Prius on a run (and quicker than any Pious has ever travelled)
Getting hit in the back by the wave of torque when you bury your foot on the motorway - theres so much top end power
Like the others say, try one and see if you like it

Re: pro's and con's 156
Why I like my 156 1.9 JTD Sport:
1) First two gears may be a little slow but 3rd gear on is quick. Forget the 0-60 factor with these cars, they're all about in-gear acceleration and stump-pulling torque. The 1.9 engine has more torque than a V6 by the way, which is quite enough.
2) Fuel economy: on long runs I exceed well over 50mpg. Despite the fuel price differential at the moment, this is good enough for me.
3) 1.9 not quite as nose heavy as the 2.4, so it does handle a little better. On 215/45/ZR17 rubber it handles quite well.
4) Mine has the leather interior, lowered Veloce suspension, 17" Sports alloys, aluminium pedals. Very nice.
5) Overall design and flair of the 156 still holds its own. It has a little bit of magic that most cars don't have.
6) And it has that iconic badge.
I think if you drove one you'd be more than convinced!
