Crazed Alfa dealers really know their stuff??

Today i went to my nearest Alfa dealer to try to get a rear spoiler for my GTV, was asked which year it was made, told him 2005 and was giving a funny look followd by "you mean you have a GT? there was no GTVs made in 2005"
I then negotiated the "staff" member to the car park where my 05 GTV was sitting.
should i be worried???

Which dealer was it? I've used Western in Perth. The mechanic seems pretty clued up but not too sure about the staff.

I showed my dealer pics of my 1750 GTV and he didn't know what it was either, until he looked at the badge on the grille... i guess here in Dubai, it's excusable cos the dealer has only been here since the early 90's, the first Alfas sold officially here were 164's, 146's and 145's......

Re: Alfa dealers really know there stuff??

Date of registration isn't necessarily the same as build date..

But I think following you to the car to look at the number plate is a bit pants... It would have been quite safe to assume it was an '04 build.

According to Pininfarina, they stopped production of the GTV in 2004. So I guess the Alfa dealer really did know his stuff.

Ralf's got a point that he could have assumed it was an '04 car, but if he'd sold you an '04 GTV spoiler for your '05 GT you'd likely be unhappy about that too.

So I think he was right to check - you'd be surprised how many Alfa owners don't know as much about their cars as they think they do.

couldn't agree more about checking to see if it was a gtv, maybe going there in a tracksuit gave him the "why has this guy got an alfa" impression

according to "performance car" magazine the last GTV was 06, could have been made in 2004 and not registered till 2006

That's what it would be, I'm sure. My own car was first registered '95, even though they were only built during '92-'93.

I emailed Pininfarina asking about GTV build dates a while ago, and they said:

"I confirm you that Pininfarina designed, engineered and produced the Alfa Romeo GTV. The car was designed by Pininfarina in 1994 and the production was done by Alfa Romeo from 1994 to 2000 then from 2000 to 2004 Pininfarina took in charge the production. We did a restyling of this model in 2003."

So an '06 registered car was built in '04 and sat in a field somewhere for two years - I don't think it's that unusual, and certainly not isolated to Alfa.
