Makes sure you're only hitting that redline when the oil is at opperating temperature. Don't EVER redline a cold engine. you're just asking for it if you do.

Each piston is going up and down 6000 times per minute, thats 100 times per second. Or are my maths wrong?
Maximum piston velocity is around 28m/second.

hehe get some fully-synth oil.

I think you're right Norbert.. Each revolution, the piston moves up once and down once. There is only half the amount of power strokes as revolutions though.

I find that too...

First time I drove it I hit the rev limiter in first pulling out of a side road into rush-hour traffic. Was so used to my old diesel's power running out before the revs I didn't even think about needing to change gear while it was still pulling so well.

Pah! Stretching those 'lastic bands til' they go pop! Gently does it now chaps, gradual progressive right foot, without undue strain, then buzz along at 120mph plus all day long. Where? Down the road by our house I reckon!

Wasil, make sure your foot is planted to the floor when you are revving her up, not just using half the throttle and leaving it late to change.. Put your foot all the way down and let her breathe

Got 12,000 rpm. out of hers, in a dream the other night, because for some reason this 'dream machine' had flexible steel belts fitted to it. Hang on, aren't these called chains.

Oh yeah this souds familiar! Those 2.0TS engines LOVE to be revved. I found them very conducive to speeding, they just want to go higher and higher up the revs and they never feel strained. Great fun.

Re: Just went upto 6000 rpm for the first time ever!

The thing i love most is in the low rev's the GT just purs along like a cruiser, then hit 4k and she becomes a hole new racey animal!!

Have you noticed the exhaust on the GT plays Italian opera above 4k!!

Very sweet

Re: Just went upto 6000 rpm for the first time ever!

the twinsparks are so well balanced that 7000rpm is perfectly healthy. the rev limiter keeps all forces within safe limits, so dont be afraid to rev it.

Re: Just went upto 6000 rpm for the first time ever!

Only hit the limiter once.It was whilst overtaking 5 cars on a straight road just before up-way Weymouth. Not a good time to find the limiter though, wrong side of the road alongside another car Quite often take her to the magic 7k, but as ZF said only when the oil is nice and thin

MG TF160 Sprint

Re: Just went upto 6000 rpm for the first time ever!

i cant remember the exact number but after 2 months of owning my alfa the cambelt went, after rebuilding it we plugged into examiner to find the rev limiter had been reached over 110 times!! now THAT is how to appreciate the engine... thats almost twice a day, every day, for the two months of ownership

just a side note - most VVC enabled engines LOVE to rev, my MG is still making power at 7500rpm, shame the internals are only rated to 8k!

1997 GTV 2.0 TS

Re: Just went upto 6000 rpm for the first time ever!

Back in the early nineties, I had a couple of Giuliettas (1.8 and 2.0). I think the 1.8 used to rev above 6500, and sounded absolutely fantastic. One day the exhaust decided to give up the ghost, about a foot short of the back box. So, being a bit short of reddies, I decided to cut it off with a hacksaw near to a bracket so it wouldn't move around too much. I ran it like this for about a month, before the neighbours got a bit fed up of my early morning departures. The sound it made near the red line was unbelievable, and the popping and crackling on the overrun had to be heard to be appreciated.
How much does a remap cost, and is it worth doing to a 97 2.0 TS with over a 100K miles?
