Mucking about the other night thinking about turbo conversions on Alfa engines.
Look at these pics - it looks like the TS is almost ready-built to take a turbo. Well, except the bottom end:
1.9 JTD turbo exhaust manifold bolts straight to Twinspark head:
You can see the holes tapped in the block for the manifold lower supper would now no longer be used - these could be used for a turbocharger support bracket to be mounted to:
Locations already tapped for a potential turbo oil feed & return:
I don't think the bottom end is up to it. And also if you used those two holes tapped into the oil cooler mount for an oil feed and return, would it impact on the lubrication of the bottom end?
nice to see this, a relative of mine did the same thing turbo manifold of a 159 jtdm (works at an alfa dealership). fitted perfectly, however the cooling line what runs on the front side of the head has to be relocated. how is this the case with this jtd manifold (the same?)
I think the bottom end will hold it, if you dont run more dan 0.5bar of turbopressure.
You can see it in the pics, it fits. Its a bare (scrap) engine though so I don't know what its like with ancillaries on. I think the only potential problem is the aluminium coolant jacket that runs across the front of the engine.
Mine has the turbo oil feed taken off of the filter housing (I'll check to see if it is the upper or lower ) and returns directly to the sump via a welded. pipe.
The bottom end will be fine as long as the oil is kept topped up as is the case with all Twinsparks.
Mine has a front mounted intercooler.
120,000 miles with a T25 turbo fitted driven hard.
Only issue I had was following a heater hose which was cut by road debris which caused it to overheat and wrecked the cylinder head gasket, incorrect head gasket was then fitted which then wrecked two pistons - melted !!
That was at 70,000, been ok since repair
Mine is a CF3 - the cr is lowered by using the earlier thicker head gasket.
The thicker head gasket is just an earlier genuine Alfa gasket, the CF3 came with the much thinner metal ? gasket so you just replace this with the earlier thicker one.
Mine is an original Autodelta conversion. Bought it already converted so not my project as work already completed !
His welds look good, almost as good as the Wizard's
So you are using the short CF3 4 -> 2 manifold, then a custom section which joins that to the turbo, what about from the turbo outlet to the centre cat? And the rest of the exhaust system, have you gone up in bore at all?
Its nice that this thread is going on now cause.. well im re searching to give it all a go
History and why:
Got an v6tb in my 155 that needs a rebuilt.. well after re map and such well go to..240 bhp.(squadra) All fun and such but i think its better too built the 2.0 TS Turbo because you got less weight in the front and around 220 BHP.
But: DOnt know how much space i got in the front of engine between engine and radiators, but i think its better too get one welded specially (manifold).. youll loose some money but you got better flow and can built it to be a perfect fit.
I am also using a turbo from a v6tb So any news foto's and such would be usefull for me as research.
@ mikewhite.. can you mail me some pics of your engine bay with the turbo and such I cant pm
And does solid fabrications still have the designs for the exhaust manifold or did you send one?
You can have a look at mine to see how AD did it
You can pick up T25 turbos cheap enough, the pipework fotr induction is about £150 with fillter, the only other big expense would be the intercooler. The turbo exit to exhuast is easy enough.
How would you map it though ?
The T25 turbo was fitted to the Rover 2.0 Turbo's such as the 800 Vitesse, 220 Tomcat etc, so there are loads about.
If it was me I would go with a T28, as it is capable of flowing more air, which will help power at the top end. The T28 was fitted to the 20V Turbo coupe, Nissan 200SX (And Pulsar), plus probably a few others.
I would worry about the TS gearbox going bang with the extra torque though. The Fiat Coupe Turbo gearboxes are far more robust, (And a lot heavier) than the TS item.
As for intercoolers, you can buy generic ones in various sizes. Just find one that fits and is as big as possible them plumb it in. You might find the intercooler and other pipework from a JTD can be made to fit straight in. The only thing is that Diesels don't have dump valves, so you will need to modify bits to get one to fit.
If you don't you will get randy pidgeon noises as the compressor stalls.

i dont know about the intercooler im looking for a air/water cooler and its intresting to fit and such.
Mapping can be done by squadra ill send them a mail.
Only problem i have (just realised) I have a smallbody and now i need to find out how i can do a TS 16v turbo the best.. I dont know whats exchange able. So whats best in your opinion? Buy a WB 2.0? Or fit an TS 16v engine into my SB v6 (155)
The gearbox.. well i think mike can provide the answer.. But dont launch the thing but get a small rolling start i geuss be a bit more carefull with the stuff.
As to the gearbox, clutch and driveshafts, my car now has 120,000 miles on original clutch, frequently hit over 7000 rpm.
Have been for the 4 years - no issues, gearbox is strong.
Im now looking if i need to buy a WB or stay SB and put the engine with gearbox in and i dont know what the diffrenced are in the technicall aspects of SB and WB. When thats found out ill take a new look at the budget. But i got a turbo bigger injectors and all other stuff that just need to be tweeked to fit on a TS engine.
i have a v6tb engine in my 155 but i think the engine aint so..doesnt really have torqeu i think its better too keep weight low and use diffrent engine that alway gives around 200 hp.lighter is more fun to drive if you fwd
Im gona do it diffrent (mostly cause i got the stuff) and built it diffrent.. Only thing is i dont get some stuff sold.
The idea is to use a t28 turbo or gt32 (i got a brand new one) and fit an oil cooler, air/water cooler. Further i got all kinds of goodie's left like rvs exhaust bigger brakes etc etc. As soon as i start ill open a thread up here.
