Re: Turbo problem 2.4 JTD

What did they base their diagnosis on? Turbo not working is not the same thing as a failed turbo. If a sensor fails the vanes in the turbo won't move and then after a short time of running like this they will stick.Even then its not impossible to free them off, I've done it on a VW turbo.Take it to an Alfa specialist for full diagnostic before you spend your money.

The best way to have a car repaired is not to tell the garage what to do, let them diagnose the fault then tell you how much they want to fix it.
If you supply a part then ask someone to fit that's all you get, no comeback if it doesn't work and you're back to square one.

Re: Turbo problem 2.4 JTD

I see, you probably would get one cheaper and if you were fitting it yourself that's fine.I just had a quick look at one site selling new and recon turbos, there are 12 different listings for the 2.4 engine. To get the right one you would need to get the part number off your own unit. But, if you were to supply the turbo to a garage to fit and there are still problems you have no comeback and will be left to pay again(bear in mind warranties on parts rarely cover labour).
I understand your problem, 900 is an awful lot of money to spend with no gaurantee of success.

Re: Turbo problem 2.4 JTD

Do not under any circumstance get the turbo reconditioned!

The VNT turbos on these cars CANNOT be refurbed.

I bought a re-conned turbo (was still around £400!) for my old 156, after a few months it blew on me, then a replacement was sent out...that did the same.

Apparently only Garrett themselves have the correct balancing equipment for these turbos.

well turbosolutions did mine, and it's fine (fingers crossed) though I did have to adjust it after fitting to make it work properly.
There is also a thread on here somewhere with instructions and pics on how to remove, strip and rebuild your VNT-the problem is the vanes clog up and stick.
If it's a VNT, dreadwebb, the first thing to check is if the actuator is moving. If it isn't, and it's because the vanes have seized, your mechanic should be able to remove it in an hour or so, then it's a fairly straightforward job to pull it apart and 'unglue' the insides.
That's what I'd try.

Happiness is....an Italian car...a boat...a sunny day...and a gorgeous Brazilian girl...

Re: Turbo problem 2.4 JTD

the actuator rod moves OK i've checked that, however turbo is sealed unit so hard to pull apart and put back together with a good seal
someone said about spaying this stuff into ur air intake and that might clear it
if not is anyone know best place to get a new turbo

Re: Turbo problem 2.4 JTD

I would recommend these guys

Owen Developments - turbochargers, performance tuning and innovative engineering solutions

There's not much they don't know about turbo's and they can usually deliver in a couple of days

Good luck

Re: Turbo problem 2.4 JTD

I've having a similar problem, although the turbo in my 156 is knackered. And believe me trying to get a new one or even a recon or remanufacter is between £350 - £500 but have found somewhere that is selling new ones for that, try county recon services or Alfa specialist 79 on ebay.

Good luck
