Alfa 155 Engine replacment advice

I need to find an engine for my 96 155. It origianly had a 2.0 T Spark.
Can anyone tell me what engines will fit in it from other cars e.g GTV, 156 etc.

Any advice gratfully received.

Or possible engine sales.

Re: Alfa 155 Engine replacment advice

The 145, 146, 155, 156, Spider, GTV and 166 all came in 2.0ltr 16v flavour, which would physically fit. Later 150bhp engines had different plumbing, so I'd say try to find a circa 1996 engine.. but if you have enough parts from both cars, then you can make any of them fit.

PM rgwm, aka lancsbreaker aka alfa betta cars, he should be able to help you out,

as ralf says there is a wide choice of cars which you'll find as a donor although the later plastic topped engines although essentially the same command higher prices and do require various little bits and bobs swapping....

Re: Alfa 155 Engine replacment advice

No.. the later engine I have in mind was tweaked to do with emissions which reduced the bhp slightly but (as I recall) some of the ancillary layout was changed... not significantly.. things like the shape of the hoses and so on.

The most popular engine seems to be the Phase 2 GTV engine, which appears in the 166 and the Spider and the 147.. (maybe 156 too) but the other cars I've mentioned have different part numbers for the donkey, so likely to have a few subtle differences. The cheapest engine is the 155 16v motor (a snip surely at £2k).

Anyway, if you have your old car and access to all the bits from the one you nick the engine from, you'll be able to cobblke it together. The 145/6 could be a good bet as many of these are pretty beat up and worthless these days. You could just buy one to get hold of the engine/ancillaries and then sell the rest for spares, much as I don't like it when that happens.

From what I can tell a engine with the aluminium top should be a straight swop I have found a gtv one that looks ok.

any ally topped one should do the trick but ralf is right, not so long ago I bought a fully working 146Ti (admittedly with high miles) for £100....

Re: Alfa 155 Engine replacment advice

I have used -98 156 engine in my wide body. I used the long block and took all accessories, sensors and valve cover from the old engine. The sensors are located differently in 156. Everything else is bolt-on except oil press switch which is located in oil pump housing in 155. It needs custom made adapter or grinding at the 156 oil pump housing. Also used new 155 clutch. The exhaust gasket is also different. There is a small additional hole in 155 gasket for exhaust circulation which is missing in 156 gasket.

Be careful with the second hand engines because if it is not properly maintained those may be quite finished. According to my recent experience these engines are very sensitive for correct oil level and oil quality.

Re: Alfa 155 Engine replacment advice

Thankyou but I really want to keep it as a 2L. If I change the type it will be getting a v6.

Re: Alfa 155 Engine replacment advice

As said above, I can probably source a 2.0 from a 155 or 145.....the one from the GTV may be more expensive...its a psychological thing....or more realistically a GTV or 156 has more value than a 145 or 155, so an engine for or from them tends to be more expensive.....

I'm based near Burnley if I can be of any help feel free to give me a call...07976 384980

Regards

Richard
